In this investigation, Mn3O4 spinel-type oxide was synthesized at low temperature using the Pechini process. We employed a sol-gel route, in which a solution of Mn(II) in a mixture of citric acid and ethylene glycol was heated to form a polymeric precursor, followed by annealing at lower temperature. The oxide obtained was identified by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The results revealed that the formation of Mn3O4 hausmannite structure with a minor secondary phase of MnSO4 occurred at or above 280 A degrees C. The sample powder consisted of fine grains with homogeneous morphology and an average size close to 1 mu m was obtained. This new preparation procedure yielded an electrode oxide which appears to be a promising cathode material for fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

Summary: The study focused on nano-structuring and functionalizing graphite using plasma treatments and immobilizing laccase as a biocatalyst for enzymatic biofuel cell cathode. The optimized parameters of atmospheric pressure plasma jet treatment led to a four-fold enhancement in oxygen reduction reaction current density on carbon nanowalls. The efficient DET transfer was confirmed by the orientation of oxidized laccase covalently immobilized on the electrode surface.

Switching of the ion exchange behaviour of PEDOT thin films during a potential cycling: An electrochemical atomic force microscopy study

Adrien Mocaer, Francoise Pillier, Alain Pailleret

Summary: Thickness variations of PEDOT thin films under potential conditioning were studied using electrochemical atomic force microscopy. The research showed that PEDOT films can switch from anion exchange behavior to cation exchange behavior through electrochemical aging, suggesting that ion exchange behaviors of PEDOT can be modulated by potential cycling.

Investigation of Corrosion Inhibitor Adsorption on Mica and Mild Steel Using Electrochemical Atomic Force Microscopy and Molecular Simulations

Huiru Wang, Sumit Sharma, Alain Pailleret, Bruce Brown, Srdjan Nesi

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption characteristics and inhibition effects of a corrosion inhibitor in a CO2 atmosphere using electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM) experiments. The results showed that at certain concentrations, the inhibitor formed uniform monolayers or bilayers on the surface, which significantly retarded the corrosion of the steel.
