Summary: This study investigated the potential mediating role of neonatal metabolites in the relationship between prenatal PFAS exposure and childhood adiposity trajectories. It found that prenatal PFAS exposure is a risk factor for persistent growth in BMI z-score in early childhood, and the alteration of neonatal acylcarnitines suggests a potential molecular pathway.

Summary: The study found that there is little evidence to support the association between cord blood DNA methylation at single CpG sites and cognitive skills in children, except for a weak association in a region near DUSP22 on chromosome 6 with non-verbal cognition. Further studies are needed to confirm this association.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between urinary cotinine (UC) concentration and smoking questionnaire (SQ) classes in pregnant mothers and the trajectory of infant BMI. The results showed that infants from high UC mothers had a low BMI at birth, but it increased from six to 36 months of age. UC concentrations, but not smoking questionnaire classes, were found to predict infant BMI trajectory, suggesting that active and second-hand smoking affect child obesity in a dose-dependent manner.

Summary: Maternal prepregnancy overweight/obesity and excessive gestational weight gain can independently or jointly increase the risks of children falling into high BMI-z trajectories from birth to 2 years of age and becoming overweight/obese at age 2. Maternal overweight/obesity and excessive gestational weight should be the primary focus for early obesity prevention efforts.

Summary: The study found that BMI in childhood does not differ between children conceived after frozen embryo transfer (FET), fresh embryo transfer (fresh-ET), or natural conception (NC). Previous studies have shown that high childhood BMI is strongly associated with obesity, cardiometabolic disease, and mortality in adulthood. Children conceived after FET have a higher risk of being born large for gestational age (LGA), which is associated with an increased risk of childhood obesity. The study suggests that ART-induced epigenetic variations may influence fetal size at birth as well as BMI and health later in life.

Summary: This study found a significant association between placental concentrations of Ethyl Paraben (EtP) and cord blood GGT activity and glucose levels, as well as early childhood BMI Z-score trajectories. The findings suggest that EtP exposure during pregnancy may impact DNA methylation and subsequently affect the growth and development of newborns.

Summary: Maternal seafood intake and prenatal mercury exposure during pregnancy may influence children's growth trajectories, with the direction of this influence varying depending on the type of seafood consumed and the level of mercury exposure. Prenatal mercury exposure was found to be negatively associated with child growth.

Summary: Maternal overweight/obesity during pre-pregnancy and childhood are both positively associated with childhood obesity, but it is uncertain which factor is a stronger predictor. Therefore, intervention programs aiming to reduce childhood obesity should focus on supporting women of childbearing age with weight management throughout their life-course.

Summary: Prenatal tobacco exposure increases the risk of childhood asthma and has negative effects on lung function, but is not associated with allergy-related outcomes. This suggests that prenatal tobacco exposure leads to adverse effects on lung development/structure, rather than susceptibility to develop allergies and type 2 inflammation.

Summary: This study found that high levels of FM% and FMI in early life can track into childhood until age 4. Infants who were not exclusively breastfed showed a higher likelihood of high FM% at age 4 compared to exclusively breastfed infants. Additionally, there were no differences in tracking based on sex and visceral fat levels.

Summary: There is increasing evidence on the positive impact of internet use on the health and well-being of older individuals, although it is not yet conclusive. This study aimed to examine the relationship between frequency of internet use and subsequent health/well-being outcomes in older individuals. The findings showed that using the internet almost every day in 2016 was associated with better outcomes in physical/cognitive health, social well-being, and health behaviors in 2019.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the impact of income levels on cardiovascular risk factors among men and women aged 30-49 years. The results showed that over the past 4 years, the low-income group consistently had higher prevalence of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes compared to the high-income group, and this gap has been increasing. Therefore, careful monitoring of the growing social disparities is necessary to achieve cardiovascular health equity at this life stage.

Summary: Japan has experienced a decline in fertility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly its adverse economic conditions. This study examined the rate of pregnancy postponement and its contributing factors, finding that declining income and concerns about future household finances were significant factors. Fear of COVID-19 and infection rate did not have a significant impact. The adverse effects of unfavorable economic conditions were stronger in 2021.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the associations between surrendering driving licence and changes in self-rated health and social interactions among older adults, based on the years elapsed since surrendering and the number of public transportation systems in the neighbourhood. The findings suggested that surrendering licence within three years was associated with poor self-rated health, and this association weakened if the licence was surrendered more than three years ago. These associations were not affected by neighbourhood public transportation systems.

Summary: This study aims to identify the factors associated with social isolation and loneliness among older adults in Japan and describe the characteristics of socially isolated but not lonely individuals, as well as lonely but not socially isolated individuals. The findings indicate that higher age, male gender, lower socioeconomic status, being a welfare recipient, and having depressive symptoms are associated with social isolation among older Japanese adults. Additionally, lower socioeconomic status, unemployment, welfare receipt, and poor physical and mental health are associated with loneliness.

Summary: This randomized controlled trial in Japan explored the effectiveness of mHealth professional consultation services in preventing postpartum depression. The study found that women in the mHealth group had a lower risk of postpartum depressive symptoms, higher self-efficacy, less loneliness, and fewer perceived barriers to healthcare access compared to the usual care group. These findings suggest that local government-funded mHealth consultation services can remove physical and psychological barriers to healthcare access in real-world settings.
