Objectives: This study examines the gender differences in the association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and later growth in childhood. Design: Ongoing prospective cohort study, which is called 'the Project Koshu', initiated in the foetal stage to the age of 9-10 years. Setting: Koshu City which was in Japanese rural area Participants: The study population comprised children born between 1 April 1991 and 31 March 1999 in Koshu City, Japan, and their mothers. Maternal smoking during early pregnancy was the exposure studied. Main outcome measures: Childhood body mass index (BMI) and BMI z-score trajectories of the children born to the smoking and non-smoking mothers by gender. Multilevel analysis that includes both individual and age as different-level variables was used for statistical analyses. Results: The participating mothers delivered 1619 babies during the study period. Birth weight and anthropometric data were collected from 1603 (at birth, 99.0%), 1358 (at age 3, 83.9%), 1248 (at age 5, 77.1%), 1270 (at age 7-8, 78.4%) and 1274 (at age 9-10, 78.7%) of these children. The mean birth weight of both the male and female children whose mothers had smoked during pregnancy was significantly low compared with those born to non-smoking mothers (P<0.01). However, the childhood BMI at each subsequent checkup age significantly increased only among the male children born to the smoking mothers. Moreover, this increase was continuously observed after 3 years of age. The results of BMI z-score analysis were also similar to these of BMI analysis. Conclusions: Smoking by pregnant women decreases the infant birth weight irrespective of gender but increases childhood weight gain especially by male children. The results might be valuable to explore the mechanism of fetal programming. International Journal of Obesity (2011) 35, 53-59; doi:10.1038/ijo.2010.198; published online 5 October 2010

Effects of beam length and vibration amplitude on measurement resolution in microresonator-based optical sensing

Naoki Kondo, Kohei Takegami, Naoyuki Arai, Akio Uesugi, Koji Sugano, Yoshitada Isono

Summary: This study investigates the impact of parameters such as beam length and vibration amplitude on the measurement resolution of microresonator-based optical sensing. The results show that a longer beam length and larger vibration amplitude can improve the measurement resolution. Additionally, the study finds that these parameters have no effect on the sensitivity and quality factor of the resonator.

Summary: This study found that participation in a health checkup program based on behavioral science was associated with reduced metabolic syndrome-related indicators. Participants showed greater reductions in weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressure compared to non-participants, especially among those with two or more risk factors for metabolic syndrome.

Trends in Cardiovascular Risk Factors by Income Among Japanese Adults Aged 30-49 Years From 2017 to 2020: A Nationwide Longitudinal Cohort Study

Kosuke Inoue, Naoki Kondo, Koryu Sato, Shingo Fukuma

Summary: This study aimed to examine the impact of income levels on cardiovascular risk factors among men and women aged 30-49 years. The results showed that over the past 4 years, the low-income group consistently had higher prevalence of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes compared to the high-income group, and this gap has been increasing. Therefore, careful monitoring of the growing social disparities is necessary to achieve cardiovascular health equity at this life stage.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pregnancy postponement - evidence from Japan

Summary: Japan has experienced a decline in fertility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly its adverse economic conditions. This study examined the rate of pregnancy postponement and its contributing factors, finding that declining income and concerns about future household finances were significant factors. Fear of COVID-19 and infection rate did not have a significant impact. The adverse effects of unfavorable economic conditions were stronger in 2021.

Neighbourhood transportation, elapsed years, and well-being after surrendering the driver?s licence in older Japanese adults: The JAGES longitudinal study

Summary: This study aimed to examine the associations between surrendering driving licence and changes in self-rated health and social interactions among older adults, based on the years elapsed since surrendering and the number of public transportation systems in the neighbourhood. The findings suggested that surrendering licence within three years was associated with poor self-rated health, and this association weakened if the licence was surrendered more than three years ago. These associations were not affected by neighbourhood public transportation systems.

Summary: This study aims to identify the factors associated with social isolation and loneliness among older adults in Japan and describe the characteristics of socially isolated but not lonely individuals, as well as lonely but not socially isolated individuals. The findings indicate that higher age, male gender, lower socioeconomic status, being a welfare recipient, and having depressive symptoms are associated with social isolation among older Japanese adults. Additionally, lower socioeconomic status, unemployment, welfare receipt, and poor physical and mental health are associated with loneliness.

Summary: This randomized controlled trial in Japan explored the effectiveness of mHealth professional consultation services in preventing postpartum depression. The study found that women in the mHealth group had a lower risk of postpartum depressive symptoms, higher self-efficacy, less loneliness, and fewer perceived barriers to healthcare access compared to the usual care group. These findings suggest that local government-funded mHealth consultation services can remove physical and psychological barriers to healthcare access in real-world settings.

Summary: This study investigated the dose intensity and reasons for dose reduction in elderly and non-elderly patients receiving adjuvant CAPOX therapy for colorectal cancer. The results suggested that a similar therapeutic intensity can be maintained in elderly patients by appropriate dose reduction and discontinuation of drug treatments. Elderly patients are more susceptible to hematologic toxicity.
