Purpose - This paper aims to present a comparison between three types of manufacturing techniques, namely, screen-printed, inkjet and gravure, using different types of inks, for the implementation of concentric ring electrodes which permit estimation of Laplacian potential on the body surface. Design/methodology/approach - Flexible concentric ring electrodes not only present lower skin-electrode contact impedance and lower baseline wander than rigid electrodes but are also less sensitive to interference and motion artefacts. The above three techniques allow printing of conductive inks on flexible substrates, and with this work, the authors aim to study which is the best technique and ink to obtain the best electrode response. Findings - From the results obtained regarding ink thickness, resistivity, electrode resistance and other performance parameters derived from electrocardiographic signal recording tests, it can be said that concentric electrodes using the screen-printing and inkjet techniques are suitable for non-invasive bioelectric signal acquisition. Originality/value - The development of new types of inks and substrates for the electronics industry and the adaptation of new manufacturing techniques allow for an improvement in the development of electrodes and sensors.

Concentric ring electrodes for non-invasive recording of gastric myoelectric activity

Y. Ye-Lin, J. L. Martinez-De-Juan, A. Jareno-Silvestre, G. Prats-Boluda

Summary: This study explored the potential of using concentric ring electrodes (CRE) to improve the spatial resolution of electrogastrogram (EGG) recordings for detecting gastric myoelectric activity. The results showed that the BC EGG records with CRE had a lower signal amplitude than bipolar recordings, but were less affected by cardiac interference, with a high slow wave (SW) detectability rate above 80%. Additionally, both fasting and postprandial EGG records using CRE exhibited similar gastric SW frequency and postprandial/fasting power ratio, suggesting the feasibility of using CRE for identifying gastric myoelectric activity.

The social stereotypes of wolves and brown bears

Veronica Sevillano-Triguero, Fernando Talayero, Jose Vicente Lopez-Bao, Sara Estrella-Aguirre

Summary: Conserving large carnivores is challenging due to the ambivalent attitudes of people towards these animals. This research found that people hold stereotypes about wolves and brown bears, with both positive and negative characteristics. The findings expand the stereotype content model and provide valuable information for the conservation of large carnivores.

Using olive mill waste compost with sprinkler irrigation as a strategy to achieve sustainable rice cropping under Mediterranean conditions

David Pena, Damian Fernandez, Angel Albarran, Soraya Gomez, Carmen Martin, Jaime Sanchez-Terron, Luis Vicente, Antonio Lopez-Pineiro

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of different management systems on rice cultivation under Mediterranean conditions. The results showed that applying mill waste compost in combination with sprinkler irrigation significantly improved soil properties and maintained rice yield compared to traditional tillage and flooding. This suggests that the application of mill waste compost combined with sprinkler irrigation could be a sustainable alternative for rice crops in Mediterranean environments, improving water efficiency and reducing weed pressure while enhancing soil properties.

Effects of Sequential Bilateral Cochlear Implantation in Children: Evidence from Speech-Evoked Cortical Potentials and Tests of Speech Perception

Leticia Cristina Vicente, Melissa Jane Polonenko, Karen Ann Gordon, Leandra Tabanez do Nascimento Silva, Orozimbo Alves Costa, Katia Freitas Alvarenga

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of sequential bilateral cochlear implant use in children who received their first implant at a young age. The results showed positive changes in cortical auditory responses and speech perception with bilateral implantation, but asymmetric function between the ears was still present. The age at the first surgery and inter-implant delay predicted the differences between the two sides after one year of bilateral stimulation. Therefore, it is important to provide bilateral cochlear implants simultaneously or with minimal delay.

Impacts of fresh and aged holm-oak biochar on clomazone behaviour in rice cropping soils after transition to sprinkler irrigation

Antonio Lopez-Pineiro, Jaime Sanchez-Terron, Carmen Martin-Franco, David Pena, Luis Andres Vicente, Soraya Gomez, Damian Fernandez-Rodriguez, Angel Albarran

Summary: This study evaluates the influence of holm oak biochar on the behavior of clomazone in rice fields and finds that the use of biochar can reduce water contamination by clomazone. The findings of this study are of great significance for addressing pollution in rice fields in water-stressed regions.

Determining the underlying role of corporate sustainability criteria in a ranking problem using UW-TOPSIS

A. Lopez-Garcia, V. Liern, B. Perez-Gladish

Summary: ESG criteria are important in investment decisions, but rating methodologies of ESG rating agencies have weaknesses in determining the relative importance of criteria. This paper proposes a MCDM approach called UW-TOPSIS that ranks firms based on their ESG global performance without the need for aggregation weights. However, it does not provide a global vector of weights for all alternatives, which is the objective of this paper.

Uterine myoelectrical activity as biomarker of successful induction with Dinoprostone: Influence of parity

Alba Diaz-Martinez, Rogelio Monfort-Ortiz, Yiyao Ye-Lin, Javier Garcia-Casado, Mar Nieto-Tous, Felix Nieto-Del-Amor, Vicente Diago-Almela, Gema Prats-Boluda

Summary: The prolonged latent phase of Induction of Labour (IOL) is associated with increased risks of maternal mortality and morbidity. Electrohysterography (EHG) has proven to be a better method than traditional clinical measures in monitoring labor progress. This study aimed to identify EHG biomarkers for predicting IOL success and evaluate the impact of myoelectrical response on parity. Significant and sustained differences were found between successful and failed groups, particularly in amplitude and non-linear parameters such as Spectral Entropy. Parous women showed a significantly higher amplitude progression rate compared to nulliparous women. These biomarkers can be used for early detection of induction failure risk and the development of more reliable and generalizable IOL success prediction systems.

Summary: This paper presents a mathematical model proposed by POCO - Equipamentos Industriais at the 155th European Study Group with Industry, which calculates the variable amount of fees that each company has to pay to the Portuguese Social Security based on their contribution to the added value of different products. The model, developed under the Modeling, Simulation and Optimization paradigm, was parametrized against different indexes and tested with a sample of Portuguese companies. Results show that the model is applicable to various scenarios and parameterizations.

Summary: The awareness of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is low among the public, physicians, and health authorities, with many still confusing it with chronic kidney insufficiency or failure. There is a prevailing view that CKD is mainly associated with kidney replacement therapy, but in reality, its main burden is accelerated aging and premature death from all causes, especially cardiovascular diseases. Researchers are calling for increased investment in CKD research to prevent it from becoming the second leading cause of death globally by 2040.

Living with wolves: Lessons learned from Iran

Alireza Mohammadi, Amir Alambeigi, Jose Vicente Lopez-Bao, Lobat Taghavi, Mohammad Kaboli

Summary: A system dynamics modeling approach was used to simulate human-wolf conflicts in an area in Iran with a high number of fatal wolf attacks. The study found that the proximity of wolves to human settlements is a determining factor in increasing attacks. Improper disposal of carcasses and waste, as well as leaving children unattended, also contribute to the recurrence of conflicts.
