The goal of this study was to develop a technology for prolonged storage of pepper fruit at low temperature, based on physical treatments and packaging materials. Physical and compositional changes of red bell pepper fruit (Capsicum annuum L. cv.Selika) were monitored during 21 days of cold storage (at 2 degrees C) plus 3 days at 20 degrees C (market simulation). Fruits were treated with tap and hot water and stored without packaging or sealing each fruit in individual shrink packaging (Cryovac (R)). This research revealed that individual shrink packaging following prestorage with hot water rinse (55 degrees C for 15 s) over brushes, significantly reduced weight loss, softening, decay incidence and chilling injury, while maintaining a quality. The wrapped fruit ripened normally (carotenoid content increased) during shelf-life period, when shifted to 20 degrees C after unwrapping. This study showed that antioxidant levels of pepper fruit may be preserved during storage.

Summary: The study investigated the antimicrobial activity of basil essential oils grown under different shading conditions and harvested at different times. The results showed that both shading conditions and harvest time significantly influenced the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils. Regardless of growing conditions, basil essential oils exhibited superior antimicrobial activity compared to commercial antibiotics in certain microorganisms.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of digestate on the yield and nutrient content of kohlrabi through field experiments. The results showed that the use of digestate significantly increased the yield and optimized the microelement content in the leaves. However, the application of digestate did not increase the plant-available nutrients in the soil, and it had an impact on the lead content in kohlrabi stems.

Essential Oil Yield, Composition, and Antioxidant Activity in Two Umbel Maturity Stages of Wild Carrot (Daucus carota L. ssp. carota) from Montenegro

Jelena Stanojevic, Zoran S. Ilic, Ljiljana Stanojevic, Lidija Milenkovic, Renata Kovac, Dragana Lalevic, Ljubomir Sunic, Aleksandra Milenkovic, Dragan Cvetkovic

Summary: The purpose of this study was to determine the yield, composition, and antioxidant activity of essential oil from umbels with seeds of wild carrot at different maturation stages. The results showed that mature umbels had a higher yield of essential oil compared to premature umbels. The main components identified in both premature and mature umbels were beta-bisabolene, 11-alpha-(H)-himachal-4-en-1-beta-ol, elemicin, and alpha-longipipene. The antioxidant activity of essential oil from mature umbels was also found to be higher than that from premature umbels during a 60-minute incubation.

Chemical Profiling and Antioxidant Activity of Wild and Cultivated Sage (Salvia officinalis L.) Essential Oil

Zoran S. S. Ilic, Zarko Kevresan, Ljubomir Sunic, Ljiljana Stanojevic, Lidija Milenkovic, Jelena Stanojevic, Aleksandra Milenkovic, Dragan Cvetkovic

Summary: Chemical composition of sage essential oils (SEOs) from wild and cultivated plants, with shading or not, was investigated. The yield of SEOs from wild plants (3.51 mL/100 g) was higher than that from cultivated plants (shaded plants: 3.20 mL/100 g and non-shaded plants: 2.56 mL/100 g). The main components of SEO from wild plants were cis-thujone, camphor, 1,8-cineole, veridiflorol, and borneol. Net shading decreased the content of toxic cis-thujone in sage and cultivated sage showed stronger antioxidant activity compared to wild sage plants.

Summary: The study investigated the yield, composition, and antioxidant activity of fennel essential oil (FEO) at different maturation stages and in leaves from wild fennel in Montenegro. It was found that the highest oil yield was obtained from premature umbels at the waxy stage, while fully ripe umbels contained the highest FEO. Leaves had the lowest FEO content.

Summary: This study showed that shading conditions could improve the yield, composition, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity of essential oils (EOs) from thyme, mint, and lemon balm plants. Thyme and mint EOs from non-shaded plants had the highest antioxidant activity, while shaded lemon balm showed stronger antioxidant activity than non-shaded plants. The EOs from all plants exhibited significant effects against several microbial strains. Proper cultivation techniques, such as shading for Lamiaceae plants, can enhance the biological activity of EOs.
