Summary: This study isolated and characterized Pleurotus eryngii polysaccharide fractions containing various polysaccharides, and found that different components had different effects on TLR2 and dectin-1 activation. The activation of the human β-1,3-glucan receptor dectin-1 was correlated with the amount of beta-glucan in each fraction.

Summary: Coriolus versicolor, an edible medicinal mushroom in China, contains two polysaccharides CVPn and CVPa, which have been shown to possess immunomodulatory abilities on RAW 264.7 macrophages. CVPa, with higher molecular weight and fewer branches, induces significant production of NO, iNOS, and TNF-alpha mRNA expression levels in cells, suggesting enhanced immunomodulatory potential compared to CVPn.

Summary: This study found that beta-glucans from Coriolus versicolor can effectively enhance the immune response against influenza virus. The beta-glucans induced the expression of various immune factors in mice and chickens, resulting in reduced weight loss, mortality, and lung viral titers. The results suggest that beta-glucans have a significant antiviral effect and could potentially be used as immunomodulators against influenza.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of beta-glucans from different sources on immune cell trained immunity and resilience, showing correlation with activation of the Dectin-1 receptor. However, Dectin-1 receptor activation is not the sole predictor for beta-glucan-mediated trained immunity. The modified in vitro model focuses on macrophage responses and can be applied to assess the potential of dietary polysaccharides to induce trained immunity.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of molecular size and chain conformation of water-soluble yeast beta-glucan on its interaction with Dectin-1, revealing that higher molecular weight beta-glucan exhibited a spherical conformation while smaller molecular weight beta-glucan showed a stiff chain conformation. The interaction between beta-glucan and Dectin-1 was found to be easier for spherical beta-glucan with longer side chains.

Summary: The present study investigated the anti-obesity effects of mature silkworm powder in adult mice. The results showed that mature silkworm powder significantly suppressed body weight gain, intra-abdominal adipose tissue, and food efficiency in both normal diet-fed and high-fat diet-fed mice. It also decreased food intake and liver weight in high-fat diet-fed mice, indicating appetite suppression and reduced conversion of feed into body weight. Furthermore, mature silkworm powder lowered the levels of glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, liver enzymes, and alkaline phosphatase in the serum. These findings suggest that mature silkworm powder has potent anti-obesity effects and is safe for long-term use as a potential therapeutic and/or nutraceutical.

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.
