Effects of β-glucans from Coriolus versicolor on macrophage phagocytosis are related to the Akt and CK2/Ikaros

Coriolus versicolor has been known to be an immune stimulator effects. For further understanding of the phagocytic activity and the intracellular mechanisms of beta-glucan from C versicolor (CVG), we examined the phagocytic activity, phosphorylation of Akt and CK2, nucleus translocation of p65 and Ikaros activity in beta-glucan-treated macrophages using RT-PCR, western blotting, and IP assay. The role of Ikaros in regulating phagocytic effects of CVG was also determined using Ikaros dominant negative isoform cells. This study suggests that CIC2/Ikaros are positive regulators and novel signaling pathway involved in phagocytosis and contributes to elucidating the mechanism underlying phagocytic activity induced by beta-glucan. Summary: This study developed a high-performance liquid chromatography method for fast analysis of main cannabinoids in hemp inflorescence and successfully performed decarboxylation of the raw material. Using a solvent gradient system with water and methanol containing trifluoroacetic acid at a wavelength of 220 nm in UV spectrum yielded optimal results.

Summary: The study demonstrated that exogenously applied putrescine can enhance salt tolerance in Panax ginseng by promoting the accumulation of certain substances and increasing antioxidant enzyme activity. Additionally, the effects of putrescine on ginsenoside levels in ginseng vary depending on the type of ginsenosides and plant parts. These findings provide valuable insights for utilizing putrescine to modulate salt tolerance and ginsenoside content in ginseng sprouts.

Summary: The accumulation of cannabinoids in hemp plants is greatly influenced by the quality of light in a controlled growing system. Different light combinations affect the synthesis of CBD and THCA, with THCA playing a significant role as a stress marker. This study suggests that THC and CBD do not show significant stress responses to light conditions compared to THCA.

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics and selection of medicinal cannabis lines grown under smart farm conditions and found that the CW21-5 line had the highest CBD production per cubic meter. Principal Component Analysis and Self-Organizing Map analysis revealed that CW21-5 is a unique arbitrary line with a narrow plant diameter and high CBD content, resulting in its excellent CBD yield.

Prokinetic Activity of Mulberry Fruit, Morus alba L.

Summary: The fruit of Morus alba L. (MAF) has been used as a food worldwide and in traditional medicine in East Asia for thousands of years. This study found that MAF has prokinetic activity and can enhance gastrointestinal motor function in mice and human intestines. It increased both myogenic and neurogenic contractions, resulting in accelerated intestinal transit rate (ITR). These findings suggest that MAF has potential as a new prokinetic agent.

Anti-Obesity Effects of the Larval Powder of Steamed and Lyophilized Mature Silkworms in a Newly Designed Adult Mouse Model

Summary: The present study investigated the anti-obesity effects of mature silkworm powder in adult mice. The results showed that mature silkworm powder significantly suppressed body weight gain, intra-abdominal adipose tissue, and food efficiency in both normal diet-fed and high-fat diet-fed mice. It also decreased food intake and liver weight in high-fat diet-fed mice, indicating appetite suppression and reduced conversion of feed into body weight. Furthermore, mature silkworm powder lowered the levels of glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, liver enzymes, and alkaline phosphatase in the serum. These findings suggest that mature silkworm powder has potent anti-obesity effects and is safe for long-term use as a potential therapeutic and/or nutraceutical.

An eco-friendly composite hydrogel based on covalently crosslinked cellulose/poly (glycerol citrate) for thallium (І) removal from aqueous solutions

Summary: In this study, a reusable biobased composite hydrogel was successfully synthesized and used for the removal of Tl(I) from aqueous solutions. The hydrogel exhibited high adsorption capacity and thermal stability, and the adsorption process was found to be thermodynamically spontaneous. The results demonstrated that the hydrogel can be reused multiple times without significant loss of its adsorption capacity.

Summary: The potential of multi-layer nanoemulsions for improving the cellular uptake, antioxidant activity, and in vitro bioaccessibility of alpha-tocopherol was examined. The results showed that the multi-layer nanoemulsions significantly enhanced the cellular uptake and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol compared to free coumarin 6. Furthermore, the use of chitosan and dextran sulfate as wall materials in the multi-layer nanoemulsions led to even higher cellular uptake, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol.
