ECOL INDIC

ISSN / eISSN
1470-160X / 1872-7034
Aims and Scope
The ultimate aim of Ecological Indicators is to integrate the monitoring and assessment of ecological and environmental indicators with management practices. The journal provides a forum for the discussion of the applied scientific development and review of traditional indicator applications as well as for theoretical, modelling and quantitative approaches such as index development. Research into the following areas will be published.

• All aspects of ecological and environmental indicators and indices.

• New indicators, and new approaches and methods for indicator development, testing and use.

• Development and modelling of indices, e.g. application of indicator suites across multiple scales and resources.

• Analysis and research of resource, system- and scale-specific indicators.

• Methods for integration of social and other valuation metrics for the production of scientifically rigorous and politically-relevant assessments using indicator-based monitoring and assessment programs.

• Approaches on how research indicators can be transformed into direct application for management purposes.

• Broader assessment objectives and methods, e.g. biodiversity, biological integrity, and sustainability, through the use of indicators.

• Resource-specific indicators such as landscape, agroecosystems, forests ecosystems, aquatic ecosystems, wetlands, etc.

The journal seeks innovative papers which provide new developmental and methodological steps for environmental indication. Submissions of results from simple monitoring programs or single case studies, resulting in descriptive approaches without any exploration from the theory of indication, from the methodology of indication, or from the management points of view are not considered suitable for publication in Ecological Indicators.

The following contributions will be accepted:

Original research papers;
Review articles;
Special themed issues;
Short notes and case studies;
Viewpoints;
Letters to the Editor;
Book reviews.

Ecological Indicators has an open access companion title, Environmental and Sustainability Indicators. It welcomes submissions promoting research on indicators as drivers for environmental management, policy formulation, and interdisciplinary research assessing complex environmental interactions for stimulating sustainable development.

Posted on August 4, 2020, returned for the first review on December 18, 2020; revised for the first review on January 30, 2020, returned for the second review on May 18, 2021, with 5 minor issues raised. Revised for the second review on May 23, completed on June 20, and received on June 22. Summary: 1. It is difficult to find reviewers for this journal, and even if you find them, they may not review your work on time, resulting in a continuous "under review" cycle. If "under review" does not change within a month, but changes close to the end of the month, be prepared for a first or second review that lasts 3-4 months. 2. Whether it is the first or second review, it is assigned to 2 reviewers, totaling 4 reviewers for me. However, as long as 2 reviewers provide feedback, the review can be considered completed. 3. This journal is focused on the field of ecological environment, so be prepared for a long battle if your research is not directly related to any "environmental indicators". Try to align it with sustainable development. 4. This journal may not have a strong presence in the field of environmental studies, but it does have a place in the broader field of ecology, especially in forest ecology. 5. As long as the journal does not lower its review standards, it is a good journal to consider, whether it is open access or not. After all, the Impact Factor of this journal is attractive to students in fields other than environmental and materials. I hope my personal summary can help those who are planning to submit or have already submitted. Finally, I wish everyone good luck in getting accepted.

3.4 submission
3.4-3.15 technical check - multiple resubmissions due to missing line numbers/inconsistency between the order of the main text table and separately uploaded table/communication error with wrong contact person (first time submitting to SCI)
3.16-4.28 first review completed, assigned three reviewers, one rejected the review while the other two provided several comments. One reviewer was Chinese (with Chinese parentheses, haha), and the other was a foreign teacher (even guessed who it might be). The Chinese reviewer gave professional and challenging suggestions, requesting additional data and drawings. The foreign teacher provided positive feedback on the well-written paper and mentioned the need for revision, pointing out a few minor issues.
5.12-6.7 second review completed, foreign teacher agreed to publish, Chinese teacher pointed out four minor issues regarding wording.
6.9 submitted the revised paper.
The research group submitted their first English paper and were unsure about the journal's reputation. They usually read articles from this journal and felt it was good, and the research content also matched the journal's scope, so they decided to submit. The submission process went relatively smoothly and the handling speed was fast. However, when submitting the second paper two months later, the handling speed noticeably slowed down. It took a month to reach the editor, but after sending the editorial email, the review process quickly commenced. Currently, all external reviewers have accepted the review for the second paper.
