Aims and Scope
ES&T is an impactful environmental science and technology research journal that aims to be transformational and direction-setting, publishing rigorous and robust papers for a multidisciplinary and diverse audience of scientists, policy makers and the broad environmental community. For more than 50 years, ES&T has been a foundational focus for thought-leading, policy-changing contributions and will continue to serve as the home for significant, broadly relevant, and generalizable research that serves to inform decision-making. The journal advances rigorous scholarship on complex environmental phenomena, particularly with respect to fate, transport, and transformation in natural and engineered systems, while simultaneously facilitating the solution of critical environmental problems. In addition to novelty and significance of research, ES&T considers the relevance of submitted manuscripts to its broad readership.

ES&T has been at the forefront of the environmental science and technology movement, serving the environmental community as a top-tier, respected, reliable and pivotal venue for exceptional, world-class environmental research across a broad and diverse range of environmentally relevant topics. Prospective authors are encouraged to review recent issues of ES&T to gain an understanding of the topics that are of greatest interest to the journal’s readers, and they are expected to establish in their cover letters the relevance of their submissions to the ES&T community. Prospective authors are also directed to the ES&T Author Guidelines for further details on the full scope of the journal, novelty and quality expectations, and minimum requirements. ES&T combines research and magazine sections and is published both in print and online.

2023.3.1 submitted
2023.3.5 editor assigned
2023.3.15 in peer review
2023.4.13 major revision
2023.6.12 submitted extended by 1 month for revisions and additional experiments
2023.7.13 minor revision
2023.7.14 submitted……
2023.7.18 prepared to accept
Three reviewers, two requested more detailed data and explanations, not very friendly, the rejection tone can be perceived. One of them directly stated that the innovation is good but not suitable for EST, while the other mentioned flaws in proving the innovation. We tried to conduct additional experiments, prepared a 42-page response, and spent two months revising. Currently, two reviewers agree to accept, but the reviewer who pointed out the flaw in the innovation requests further amendments. We don't want to continue, so we politely declined and revised again. The outcome is unknown.
Personal impression: Once submitted to EST, anything is possible. Most of the reviewers are experts in their respective fields, and their comments are insightful and direct. We should try to conduct the requested experiments and, if possible, supplement the research with additional content they did not mention. Although sometimes they raise issues that they themselves cannot solve, we can only politely decline. Hoping for good luck. Will update when there is news.

I have submitted this magazine twice, and in my mind, EST is the top magazine. The first and second times were both in the hands of the same associate editor. Next, I will list the submission process to provide some information for future contributors.

First submission: After submitting, it took one day to reach the editor-in-chief and three more days to reach the associate editor, Jordi Dachs. Then, it went for review (approximately 40 days). There were three reviewers, one of whom was more aggressive in their comments. Two major revisions and one minor revision were suggested. However, the associate editor rejected the submission, indicating that it would no longer be considered. Overall, the feedback was very helpful and contributed significantly to the article. Later, I resubmitted it to JHM, and it was accepted in one month.

Second submission: I submitted it on the 3rd of this month, and it took two days to reach the editor-in-chief and another two days to reach the associate editor, Jordi Dachs. It is currently uncertain, but if there is any news, I will update it later. Overall, the handling speed of the manuscript is relatively reasonable and can be described as steady.
