BACKGROUND: Agaricus bisporus (white button mushroom) is an important culinary and medicinal species of worldwide importance. The present study investigated for the first time whether it may be grown on substrates supplemented with Se alone or in combination with Cu and/or Zn (0.1-0.8 mmol L-1) to produce fruiting bodies of increased nutritional value. RESULTS: As found, substrate supplementation did not affect yielded biomass up to 0.6 mmol L-1 element concentrations regardless of the cultivation model. At 0.8 mmol L-1 Se + Cu and Se + Zn supplementation biomass comparable with controls still developed. The accumulation of trace elements in the fruiting bodies generally increased over the concentration gradient reaching its maximum at 0.6 mmol L-1 (for Se + Zn and Se + Cu + Zn) and 0.8 mmol L-1 (for Se and Se+ Cu). The organic Se constituted the greatest share in total Se quota. As calculated, each 10 g of dried fruiting bodies of A. bisporus obtained from 0.6 or 0.8 mmol L-1 supplementation would represent 342-469% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for Se, 43.4-48.5% for Cu and 5.2-5.8% for Zn. CONCLUSION: Considering inexpensive methods of A. bisporus cultivation, global popularity and use of this mushroom, its biofortification with Se, Cu and Zn could have a practical application in deficiency prevention and assisted treatment. Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different metal concentrations in the cultivation medium on the biomass, plant development, and element uptake of Acer platanoides L. seedlings, and analyze the impact on the distribution and content of Ca, K, Mg, and Na in plant parts with phenols analysis. The results showed that the mixture of two metals resulted in lower leaf biomass but higher major elements content. Leaves cultivated in Pb-5 + Zn-1, Pb-1 + Zn-1, and Pb-1 + Zn-5 experimental systems exhibited specific browning of their edges. The presence and concentration of other elements in the soil also played a significant role in modulating element uptake, total phenolic content, and plant development.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the chemistry of water mixed with different levels of perchlorate in Martian regolith simulant. The presence of perchlorate does not significantly affect the general patterns of water chemistry parameters. The results provide important insights into the physicochemical conditions of modern liquid water on Mars and its potential implications for biological life and resource utilization.

Summary: The contents of 40 elements were analyzed in archaeological and contemporary wood samples of pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and oak (Quercus robur L.) after 10 years of deposition in two different environments (lake bottom sediment vs. wet peat) at a Lusatian culture archaeological site in Biskupin, Poland. The elemental contents were also determined in the soil where the wood samples were deposited. The results showed that lake bottom deposits had higher element contents compared to wet peat. It was also found that Q. robur (both modern and archaeological) contained more minerals than P. sylvestris. The concentration of chemical elements, regardless of deposition conditions, wood species, and degradation degree, was too low to affect the degradation process of the Lusatian culture remains in Biskupin.

Lactarius and Russula mushroom genera - Similarities/differences in mineral composition within the Russulaceae family

Przemyslaw Niedzielski, Malgorzata Szostek, Anna Budka, Sylwia Budzynska, Marek Siwulski, Jedrzej Proch, Pavel Kalac, Miroslaw Mleczek

Summary: The efficiency of mineral element accumulation in mushrooms is significantly influenced by mushroom species, with species belonging to the Lactarius genus containing higher amounts of major elements compared to species in the Russula genus. The results also suggest that specific species within each genus have significantly higher element content, indicating the essential role of both mushroom species and genera in modulating element accumulation.

A Review of Common Cyanotoxins and Their Effects on Fish

Halina Falfushynska, Nadiia Kasianchuk, Eduard Siemens, Eliana Henao, Piotr Rzymski

Summary: Global warming and human-induced eutrophication have led to the presence of various cyanotoxins in aquatic environments, which pose a threat to aquatic biota and human health. This paper reviews the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity of the most studied cyanotoxins in the aquatic environment, namely microcystins, nodularins, cylindrospermopsin, anatoxins, and saxitoxins, especially in fish. The complex effects of cyanotoxins on fish include primary toxicity signs, oxidative stress, mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum dysfunction, as well as immunomodulatory, inflammatory, and endocrine responses. Further research is needed to understand the long-term effects of cyanotoxins on fish and to establish effective monitoring and management strategies.

Summary: mRNA vaccines are life-saving interventions and have shown promise in providing protection against various viruses. There are ongoing technological challenges in developing the mRNA platform, as well as potential for manufacturing in low-income countries. The continued research and interest in mRNA technology may overcome existing challenges and expand the portfolio of authorized vaccines, opening up new pathways against infections with no current immunization methods.

A Fast and Efficient Procedure of Iron Species Determination Based on HPLC with a Short Column and Detection in High Resolution ICP OES

Summary: This paper presents the optimization and application of a new hyphenated procedure for iron ionic speciation, which combines high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a short cation-exchange column coupled to high resolution inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP hrOES). Fe(III) and Fe(II) species were effectively separated on the column using a mobile phase containing pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDCA). The method was validated using the standard addition method and applied successfully to analyze iron speciation in sediments, soils, and archaeological pottery.

The pit latrine paradox in low-income settings: A sanitation technology of choice or a pollution hotspot?

Willis Gwenzi, Jerikias Marumure, Zakio Makuvara, Tinoziva T. Simbanegavi, Emma Laureane Njomou-Ngounou, Esther Laurentine Nya, Korbinian Kaetzl, Chicgoua Noubactep, Piotr Rzymski

Summary: Pit latrines are widely promoted for sanitation improvement, but their pollution and health risks are often neglected. This review presents the paradox that pit latrines are both considered a sanitation technology to safeguard human health and pollution and health risk hotspots. Evidence shows that pit latrines serve as catch-all receptacles for hazardous waste disposal, including medical, pesticide, menstrual hygiene, and electronic wastes. Pit latrines receive, harbor, and transmit conventional and emerging contaminants, as well as bacterial and viral pathogens and disease vectors. They also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Contaminants in pit latrines can migrate into surface water and groundwater systems, posing risks to human health. The review discusses mitigation measures and future research directions. The pit latrine paradox aims to stimulate discussion and research for refining the technology to enhance its functionality while mitigating pollution and health risks.
