Orange (Citrus sinensis) peels, consumed in the diet as wines, candies or as infusions, are rich sources of phenolic compounds. This study sought to investigate the protective ability of phenolic extracts from orange peels against oxidative stress in primary human colonic tumor (Caco-2) and metastatic cell lines (LoVo and LoVo/ADR). The effects of the extracts on glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase and total matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activities in the cells were also investigated. The results revealed that the extracts displayed cellular antioxidant activities and increased the activities of glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase in the cells. Furthermore, the extracts inhibited total MMP activities in the cells in a dose-dependent manner. HPLC fingerprinting revealed the presence of flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acid. This study showed that orange peels phenolic extracts exhibited cellular antioxidant activity and inhibited MMP activity in colon cancer cells.

Effect of chlorogenic acid plus donepezil on critical neurocortical enzyme activities, inflammatory markers, and synaptophysin immunoreactivity in scopolamine-assaulted rats, supported by multiple ligand simultaneous docking

Opeyemi B. Ogunsuyi, Folorunsho B. Omage, Omamuyovwi M. Ijomone, Ganiyu Oboh, Joao B. T. Rocha

Summary: The study investigated the impact of chlorogenic acid on the therapeutic properties of donepezil in a rat model of amnesia induced by scopolamine. The results showed that chlorogenic acid improved the impaired biochemical parameters, glial cells, and neuronal function in scopolamine-treated rats. Docking analysis also revealed a higher binding energy between donepezil and chlorogenic acid with acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase compared to individual interactions. This study suggests that chlorogenic acid could enhance the therapeutic effects of donepezil.

Aqueous extract of Massularia acuminata exerts erectogenic effect by modulating critical enzymes and hormones in streptozotocin-induced erectile dysfunction in rats

Stephen Adeniyi Adefegha, Ganiyu Oboh, Abraham Olanrewaju Adedipe

Summary: The aqueous extract of Massularia acuminata stem (MAS) has been found to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction (ED), with its action being attributed to the modulation of sexual behavior, hormonal levels, enzyme activity, and related molecular levels. Additionally, phenolic compounds such as catechin and kaempferol have been identified as the main bioactive compounds in MAS, which may contribute to its erectogenic effects.

Antioxidant-rich Terminalia catappa fruit exerts antihypertensive effect via modulation of angiotensin-1-converting enzyme activity and H2S/NO/cGMP signalling pathway in Wistar rats

Adeniyi A. Adebayo, Ayokunle O. Ademosun, Bukola C. Adedayo, Ganiyu Oboh

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of Terminalia catappa fruits on blood pressure, NO/cGMP signalling pathway, angiotensin-1-converting enzyme and arginase activity, and oxidative stress biomarkers in hypertensive rats induced by L-NAME. The results showed that L-NAME caused an increase in blood pressure and enzyme activity, as well as oxidative stress, but treatment with Terminalia catappa fruits and sildenafil citrate lowered blood pressure and improved antioxidant status. Therefore, Terminalia catappa fruits could be considered as a dietary regimen and functional food in alleviating hypertension.

Effect of dietary inclusion of Fireweed (Crassocephalum crepidioides) on behavioural patterns, memory indices, and activities of cholinergic and monoaminergic enzymes in a fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) model of Alzheimer's disease

Ganiyu Oboh, Gbemisola Margaret Busari, Ayokunle Olubode Ademosun, Sunday Idowu Oyeleye

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with fireweed leaf on neurodegenerative markers in a fruit fly model of Alzheimer's disease. The results showed that fireweed leaf treatment improved survival rate and behavioral performance, inhibited cholinesterase and monoamine oxidase activities, and enhanced antioxidant status in the fruit flies. These effects may be attributed to the polyphenols and dietary fibers present in fireweed leaf. The findings suggest that fireweed leaf may have neuroprotective properties and support its traditional use for the management of neurological disorders.
