Capacity of a Single Spiking Neuron Channel

Information transfer through a single neuron is a fundamental component of information processing in the brain, and computing the information channel capacity is important to understand this information processing. The problem is difficult since the capacity depends on coding, characteristics of the communication channel, and optimization over input distributions, among other issues. In this letter, we consider two models. The temporal coding model of a neuron as a communication channel assumes the output is tau where tau is a gamma-distributed random variable corresponding to the interspike interval, that is, the time it takes for the neuron to fire once. The rate coding model is similar; the output is the actual rate of firing over a fixed period of time. Theoretical studies prove that the distribution of inputs, which achieves channel capacity, is a discrete distribution with finite mass points for temporal and rate coding under a reasonable assumption. This allows us to compute numerically the capacity of a neuron. Numerical results are in a plausible range based on biological evidence to date.

This paper proposes an NN-based multi-symbol equalization scheme inspired by multi-task learning to significantly reduce CC.

Summary: The Event Horizon Telescope observed the compact radio source, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), in the Galactic Center and found its variability on short timescales of up to 1 minute at millimeter wavelengths. The spectral energy distribution of Sgr A* is flat at 220 GHz, indicating low optical depth for the event horizon scale source.

Summary: This study presents a framework for characterizing the variability power spectrum of emission structures around supermassive black holes. The authors applied this framework to a library of simulations and observed images relevant to the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). They found that the power spectrum of variability is generally a red-noise process in both temporal and spatial dimensions, with the highest power occurring on the longest timescales and largest spatial scales. The study also explores the ability of variability studies to constrain physical parameters and provides specific expectations for the behavior of accretion flows in M87* and Sgr A*.

Summary: This study presents new constraints on potential deviations from the Kerr metric based on observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) using the 2017 Event Horizon Telescope. The authors calibrate the relationship between the black hole shadow and the observed size of ring-like images using both Kerr and non-Kerr simulations. They conclude that the observed image size is within similar to 10% of the Kerr predictions and use these bounds to constrain alternative metrics and charges of spacetimes. The study also explores the possibility of Sgr A* being a compact object with a thermal or reflective surface and compares the results to other gravitational tests.

Summary: This article presents the first event-horizon-scale images and spatiotemporal analysis of Sgr A* taken with the Event Horizon Telescope in April 2017. Different imaging methods and scattering effect corrections were used to reconstruct the static images of Sgr A*. The analysis shows that the Sgr A* image is dominated by a bright ring of emission with a diameter of about 50 microarcseconds, consistent with the expected shadow of a 4 x 10^6 solar mass black hole in the Galactic center at a distance of 8 kiloparsecs.

Summary: The Event Horizon Telescope has provided an extraordinary physical resolution for observing astrophysical phenomena in known black holes, but it also brings new practical challenges. This study presents a new set of tools to detect and mitigate intraday variability in black holes, using data-driven and Bayesian noise modeling approaches. The methods are validated with simulated data and successfully applied to observations of M87*.

The data supports the presence of a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, with an image that is consistent with the expected appearance of a Kerr black hole. Summary: Recent advancements in VLBI have enabled the EHT to observe and analyze the inner accretion flows of large supermassive black holes. The sparse coverage of the EHT poses a challenge in resolving highly time-variable sources. However, the changing coverage of the EHT can contain time regions within a single observation that facilitate dynamic imaging. A metric based on baseline isotropy and density is introduced to rank array configurations for accurate dynamic reconstructions.

Summary: We observed the calibrator source J1924-2914 for Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of the Milky Way, using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), and obtained the first high-resolution images. This compact radio source shows strong optical variability and polarization. Our observations reveal a characteristic bending in the jet and provide evidence for ordered toroidal magnetic fields in the core of the blazar.

Summary: This study reports on the observations of quasar NRAO 530 with the Event Horizon Telescope, which produced the first image of the most distant object observed by EHT to date. The image shows a bright feature with linear polarization at the core of the quasar, revealing a helical magnetic field structure in the jet.
