Summary: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is associated with abnormal serotonin metabolism and mucosal neurite outgrowth, and 5-HT7 receptor plays a role in the process. Increased mucosal density of 5-HT7-expressing nerve fibers and elevated levels of neurotrophins contribute to visceral hypersensitivity in IBS. A novel 5-HT7 antagonist may be used as an oral analgesic for IBS-related pain.

The results showed that IBS patients with abdominal discomfort have similar bowel symptoms and psychosocial features to those with abdominal pain.

Summary: Although the gut microbiota consists of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, most studies on the microbiota-gut-brain axis in IBS have primarily focused on bacteria due to their higher presence. However, recent research on the intestinal mycobiome in inflammatory bowel disease suggests that the low numbers of fungi and viruses may still have relevance. This review discusses the current IBS mycobiome data and how these findings could relate to previous observations in IBS, as well as identifies questions for future research.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms and post-COVID-19 disorders of gut-brain interaction among hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The results showed that patients with COVID-19 had higher rates of gastrointestinal symptoms on hospital admission and lower rates of constipation and hard stools at 12 months post-infection compared to the control group. Additionally, the rate of irritable bowel syndrome was significantly higher in patients with COVID-19 than in controls.

Summary: This study investigated the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in post-ICH neurogenesis using a rodent model and patients with ICH. The results showed that the BDNF concentration in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was positively correlated with neurogenesis-promoting capacity. This suggests that BDNF plays an important role in regulating neurogenesis after ICH.

Summary: IBS-D is a functional bowel disease with unclear diagnostic markers and pathogenesis. Non-coding RNAs, including tsRNAs, have been found to be involved in IBS-D. Through high-throughput sequencing, 28 differential tsRNAs were identified, with tiRNA-His-GTG-001, tRF-Ser-GCT-113, and tRF-Gln-TTG-035 showing potential as markers and involvement in key signaling pathways like GABAergic synapse and TNF-alpha. The correlation analysis suggests these tsRNAs could be potential biomarkers for diagnosing and treating IBS-D.

Summary: Disorders of the gut-brain interaction have a negative impact on quality of life and socio-economic burden. The understanding and guidelines for the treatment of functional abdominal pain disorders in children are lacking, making their management challenging. It is important to make an accurate diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome or functional abdominal pain-not otherwise specified in children with chronic abdominal pain to prevent unnecessary referrals and costs.
