Evaluation of a strategy for identification of hepatitis C virus carriers in outpatient and emergency units: contribution to the microelimination of hepatitis C in Brazil

Rodrigo Gardona, Flavia Appel, Samara Ercolin, Roberto J. Carvalho-Filho, Dulce A. Barbosa, Maria Lucia Ferraz

Summary: This study evaluated a strategy for identifying HCV carriers based on screening in emergency units and specialty outpatient clinics, as well as among older adults (>= 45 years). The prevalence of HCV infection identified in the sample was 0.66%, with all patients having a history of risk factors for infection. The findings highlight the challenge of identifying asymptomatic HCV carriers in Brazil.

Summary: In 2015, EASL and ALEH published a guideline on the use of non-invasive markers of liver disease, primarily focusing on elastography methods. In 2019, SBH and CBR sponsored a meeting in Brazil to establish specific recommendations on the use of imaging-related noninvasive technology for diagnosing liver fibrosis and steatosis based on evidence-based discussions by an expert committee.

Validation and Performance of FibroScan®-AST (FAST) Score on a Brazilian Population with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Villela-Nogueira

Summary: The FAST score performs well in a Brazilian NAFLD population, even in patients with higher BMI when the XL probe is used. Thus, FAST can be utilized as a noninvasive screening tool to exclude the diagnosis of progressive NASH, reducing the need for unnecessary liver biopsies.

Elze Maria Gomes Oliveira, Ana Cristina de Castro Amaral, Patricia Marinho Costa Oliveira, Valeria Pereira Lanzoni, Renata Mello Perez, Janaina Luz Narciso-Schiavon, Raul Carlos Whale, Roberto Jose Carvalho-Filho, Maria Lucia Cardoso Gomes Ferraz, Antonio Eduardo Benedito Silva

Summary: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) has a spectrum of symptoms and the acute presentation could be genuine acute AIH or acute exacerbation of chronic AIH. This study aimed to identify the prevalence, clinical features, and prognostic factors associated with genuine acute AIH (GAAIH) and compare these cases with acute exacerbation of chronic AIH. Results showed that GAAIH was rare and associated with less severe liver function impairment.

Assessment of liver disease by non-invasive methods in perinatally infected Brazilian adolescents and young adults living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Aida de Fatima Thome Barbosa Gouvea, Roberto Carvalho Filho, Daisy Maria Machado, Fabiana Bononi do Carmo, Suenia Vasconcelos Beltrao, Laurene Sampaio, Maria Isabel De Moraes-Pinto, Regina Celia de Menezes Succi

Summary: A cross-sectional study was conducted to identify liver fibrosis in HIV-infected adolescents and young adults, revealing that 14.4% of patients exhibited liver stiffness. Both the AST-to-Platelet Ratio Index (APRI) and the Fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4) showed low rates of clinically significant liver fibrosis in this population.
