Staging Fibrosis in Chronic Viral Hepatitis

Furthermore, it addresses the issue of evaluating liver fibrosis after HCV cure.

Factors Associated with Disagreement of Fibrosis Stages between 2D-Shear Wave Elastography and Transient Elastography in Chronic Hepatitis B

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the agreement of elastography techniques in chronic Hepatitis B (CHB), specifically between transient elastography (TE) and two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE), and to analyze the factors related to the disagreement of measures. The results showed a strong correlation and good agreement between TE and 2D-SWE in identifying fibrosis stages in CHB patients. Diabetes mellitus and antiviral therapy were found to impact the agreement of stiffness measures obtained with these elastographic methods.

Assessment of compensated advanced chronic liver disease based on serum bile acids in chronic hepatitis B patients

Summary: This study aimed to develop a prediction model based on individual bile acid (BA) profiles to identify compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD). The study found that the content of individual BA in the serum increased significantly with the degree of fibrosis, especially glycine-conjugated BA and taurine-conjugated BA. The optimized random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) models successfully distinguished patients with cACLD caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV). This study provides a new tool for identifying cACLD and improving the management of patients with chronic liver disease.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Chronic Viral Hepatitis: Where Do We Stand?

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of cancer-related death, with chronic viral hepatitis being a significant contributing factor. The pathophysiology of viral-related HCC involves liver inflammation, oxidative stress, and deregulation of cell signaling pathways. Regular ultrasound surveillance is recommended for patients with cirrhosis and high-risk individuals with chronic HBV infection. Antiviral therapy reduces the risks of HCC development and recurrence. Various scoring systems have been developed to predict the risk of HCC development in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

Evaluation of a strategy for identification of hepatitis C virus carriers in outpatient and emergency units: contribution to the microelimination of hepatitis C in Brazil

Summary: This study evaluated a strategy for identifying HCV carriers based on screening in emergency units and specialty outpatient clinics, as well as among older adults (>= 45 years). The prevalence of HCV infection identified in the sample was 0.66%, with all patients having a history of risk factors for infection. The findings highlight the challenge of identifying asymptomatic HCV carriers in Brazil.

Summary: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) has a spectrum of symptoms and the acute presentation could be genuine acute AIH or acute exacerbation of chronic AIH. This study aimed to identify the prevalence, clinical features, and prognostic factors associated with genuine acute AIH (GAAIH) and compare these cases with acute exacerbation of chronic AIH. Results showed that GAAIH was rare and associated with less severe liver function impairment.

Summary: A cross-sectional study was conducted to identify liver fibrosis in HIV-infected adolescents and young adults, revealing that 14.4% of patients exhibited liver stiffness. Both the AST-to-Platelet Ratio Index (APRI) and the Fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4) showed low rates of clinically significant liver fibrosis in this population.
