LA-ICP-MS U-Pb ages of detrital zircons from eight siliciclastic samples from the Basal units of the Variscan allochthonous complexes of NW Iberia are used to establish the maximum depositional age and provenance of two tectonically-stacked metasedimentary sequences deposited on the outermost margin of Gondwana, and subsequently involved in the Rheic Ocean suture. The maximum depositional ages for the two sequences is latest Neoproterozoic and latest Cambrian, respectively. The age spectra are also used to discuss the paleoposition of the NW Iberian basement on the continental margin of Gondwana prior to the opening of the Rheic Ocean, which is tentatively placed in northern Africa, between the West African and Saharan cratons. Based on similarities and differences with age data from the NW Iberian autochthon and other allochthonous terranes involved in the Rheic suture, the relative proportions of Mesoproterozoic zircons in both assemblages are proposed as markers of proximity to the eastern part of the West African craton during late Neoproterozoic and late Cambrian. The geodynamic processes that took place along this part of Gondwana during the late Neoproterozoic, late Cambrian and Early Ordovician are discussed in the light of the LA-ICP-MS results, as well as the sedimentological record, magmatic evolution and plate tectonic setting of NW Iberia. These processes are linked to late Neoproterozoic and Cambro-Ordovician subduction events beneath the northern Gondwanan margin. (C) 2009 International Association for Gondwana Research. Tectonostratigraphy of the Merida Massif reveals a new Cadomian suture zone exposure in Gondwana (SW Iberia)

Ruben Diez Fernandez, Ricardo Arenas, Esther Rojo-Perez, Sonia Sanchez Martinez, Jose Manuel Fuenlabrada

Summary: The Neoproterozoic and Palaeozoic rocks of the Merida Massif in SW Iberia have been grouped into tectonostratigraphic units, separated by crustal-scale thrusts and/or extensional detachments. This tectonic setting was formed during the Cadomian Orogeny and later modified by the Variscan Orogeny, resulting in the juxtaposition of different units and the formation of folds and thrusts. The Merida Ophiolite represents a Cadomian suture zone exposure in the Gondwanan realm, reflecting inland transference of allochthonous terranes onto mainland Gondwana during different geological periods.

Implications for sedimentary transport processes in southwestern Africa: a combined zircon morphology and age study including extensive geochronology databases

Andreas Gaertner, Mandy Hofmann, Johannes Zieger, Anja Sagawe, Rita Krause, Marika Stutzriemer, Subani Gesang, Axel Gerdes, Linda Marko, Cristiano Lana, Ulf Linnemann

Summary: Extensive morphological and age studies on detrital zircon grains from modern sands of Namibia reveal complex mechanisms of sediment transport. A large Southern Namibian Sediment Vortex and a modified model of the Orange River sand highway are hypothesized based on the results of this study. The potential impact of spatial variations of erosion rates on sediment movements towards the interior of the continent is also highlighted. Additionally, detrital zircon morphology and large geo-databases are identified as valuable tools for provenance analysis.

Detrital zircon ages and provenance of a Cambrian succession in the Sierra Albarrana Domain (SW Iberian Massif)

Byron Solis-Alulima, Jacobo Abati, Alicia Lopez-Carmona, Gabriel Gutierrez-Alonso, Javier Fernandez-Suarez, Daniel F. Stockli

Summary: This study presents U-Pb geochronological data on detrital zircon grains from the metasedimentary successions in the Sierra Albarrana Domain. The results suggest that this domain is likely part of the autochthonous section of the Central Iberian Zone and the sedimentary provenance may be from the Saharan Metacraton with possible minor input from the Tuareg Shield. The study also compares the U-Pb zircon data with existing data from Neoproterozoic and Cambrian rocks in the Iberian Massif using multidimensional scaling techniques.

Reply to Comment by Azor et al. on On the Rootless Nature of a Devonian Suture in SW Iberia (Ossa-Morena Complex, Variscan Orogen): Geometry and Kinematics of the Azuaga Fault

Ruben Diez Fernandez, Carlos Fernandez, Ricardo Arenas, Irene Novo-Fernandez

Summary: Geological mapping, structural data, and analytical modeling support the notion that the Central Unit belongs to a rootless Devonian suture zone that underwent late uplift and upright folding. However, other studies overlook this evidence and fail to interpret the structural dip angle accurately in seismic images. Overall, the model proposed by Diez Fernandez et al. remains valid.

Dating blueschist-facies metamorphism within the Naga ophiolite, Northeast India, using sheared carbonate veins

Bidyananda Maibam, Richard M. Palin, Axel Gerdes, Richard W. White, Stephen Foley

Summary: The tectonic significance of blueschist-facies rocks associated with the Indo-Myanmar ophiolite belt is uncertain due to the lack of detailed petrological study and reliable age data. This study presents new petrological and geochronological data from the Nagaland complex, northeast India, which provide constraints on the pressure-temperature conditions and ages of metamorphism. The results suggest that the region experienced high-pressure prograde-to-peak metamorphism followed by lower-pressure retrograde metamorphism, with peak metamorphism dated at approximately 95 Ma and retrograde metamorphism at approximately 90 Ma. The study also indicates an exhumation rate of approximately 1 cm/year, consistent with Phanerozoic plate tectonic rates.

U-Pb geochronology and isotopic geochemistry of adakites and related magmas in the Ediacaran arc section of the SW Iberian Massif: The role of subduction erosion cycles in peri-Gondwanan arcs

Esther Rojo-Perez, Ulf Linnemann, Mandy Hofmann, Jose M. Fuenlabrada, Johannes Zieger, Javier Fernandez-Suarez, Pilar Andonaegui, Sonia Sanchez Martinez, Ruben Diez Fernandez, Ricardo Arenas

Summary: In the SW region of the Iberian Massif, changes in the subduction angle, subduction rate, mantle sources, and crustal materials have a recognizable cyclicality in the peri-Gondwanan Ediacaran arc section. Through geochronology, geochemistry, and isotopic sources, these changes can be traced in the magmatic bodies. The study highlights the importance of subduction erosion mechanisms in the peri-Gondwana margin during the Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian times.

Opening and closure of Cadomian peri-Gondwanan oceans: age and evolution of the Merida Ophiolite (SW Iberia)

R. Arenas, E. Rojo-Perez, R. Diez Fernandez, R. Albert, I Novo-Fernandez, S. Sanchez Martinez, J. M. Fuenlabrada, P. Andonaegui, D. Moreno-Martin, A. Gerdes, A. Garcia-Casco

Summary: The Ossa-Morena Complex in the SW Iberian Massif contains a stack of units with different origins, including a Cadomian ophiolite, the Merida Ophiolite. The Cadomian terranes in this complex are important for reconstructing the Ediacaran margin of Gondwana in NW Africa. The Merida Ophiolite represents oceanic lithosphere of a back-arc basin and played a role in the collision between the volcanic arc and the Gondwana margin.

A complex accretionary assembly of Pangea developed in the range c. 400-340 Ma: the four successive events of high-P/ultra-high-P metamorphism of the Variscan Orogen

Irene Novo-Fernandez, Ricardo Arenas, Ruben Diez Fernandez, Antonio Garcia-Casco

Summary: In the most internal zone of the Variscan Orogen, evidence of almost continuous metamorphism and accretion onto the continental margin of Gondwana for about 60 million years has been found. This includes three successive (ultra)high-P metamorphic episodes caused by subduction of peri-Gondwanan lithosphere, followed by the continental collision between Gondwana and Laurussia. The geological events involved the formation of high-P, high-T metamorphic belts, the opening and closing of Middle Devonian oceanic basins, and the accretion of ophiolites.

Hf isotopes in detrital zircon grains of the Sierra Albarrana Domain (SW Iberian Massif): Eburnean v. Archean basement signatures

Byron Solis-Alulima, Jacobo Abati, Alicia Lopez-Carmona, Gabriel Gutierrez-Alonso, Javier Fernandez-Suarez, Daniel F. F. Stockli

Summary: This study analyzes Lu-Hf data on detrital zircon grains from the Lower Paleozoic metasedimentary successions in the Sierra Albarrana Domain of the SW Iberian Massif, providing new information about their origin, record of continental crustal evolution, and geological affinity. Previous U-Pb data on detrital zircon grains in this region show two main age populations at approximately 595 Ma and 1.90 Ga. The Ediacaran events suggest the presence of a magmatic arc with input of juvenile magmas intruding into the Eburnean basement of Gondwana, and a possible mixing with it. The Paleoproterozoic zircon population corresponds to the Eburnean Orogeny. The study also suggests a possible affinity with the Central Iberian Zone during Ediacaran-Cambrian times but different settings during the Paleoproterozoic.

Polycyclic metamorphic evolution of the Sierra Albarrana Schists (SW Iberian Massif): From low-pressure Ordovician rifting to medium-pressure Variscan overprint

Byron Solis-Alulima, Alicia Lopez-Carmona, Jacobo Abati, Yamirka Rojas-Agramonte, Romain Bousquet, Jose Gonzalez del Tanago

Summary: This study provides new insights into the polycyclic metamorphic evolution of the Sierra Albarrana Domain in the SW Iberian Massif. Mineral assemblages and petrological modeling were used to accurately reproduce the assemblage of St-Grt-And pelitic schists, but faced difficulties in modeling And-Grt-Sil-bearing schists. The study also investigates the influence of Fe3+ on phase relations in pelites and records a regional low-pressure metamorphic event followed by exhumation and a localized medium-pressure metamorphic event.

Building and Collapse of the Cadomian Orogen: A Plate-Scale Model Based on Structural Data From the SW Iberian Massif

Diana Moreno-Martin, Ruben Diez Fernandez, Ricardo Arenas, Esther Rojo-Perez, Irene Novo-Fernandez, Sonia Sanchez Martinez

Summary: The Cadomian Orogeny created a subduction-related mountain range along the periphery of Gondwana and formed the basement of the Iberian Massif. Detailed analysis in SW Iberia has identified three deformation phases and provided insights into the building and dismantling processes of the Cadomian Orogen. The first phase involved tabular plutons during the formation of a continental arc, the second phase produced folding and thickening of the crust, and the third phase resulted in an orogen-parallel dome with extensional flow. The formation of the Cadomian Orogen was associated with ongoing subduction, while its dismantling during the Early Paleozoic was driven by oblique convergence.

Effect of montmorillonite and humic acid on cotransport of g-C3N4 and lead: The role of triazine ring in lead adsorption and deposition in soil components

Shi Zhou, Ting Zhou, Duo Guan, Yong Yao, Huimin Sun, Ahmed Ali Mosa, Yajie Zuo, Xianqiang Yin

Summary: Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been widely used due to its excellent optical properties and physicochemical stability. The risk of g-C3N4 transport in the environment has been overlooked, but this study investigated its transport behavior in various media. The results showed that flow rate and ionic strength influenced the transport, and the presence of lead (Pb) affected the outflow of g-C3N4. The unique structure of g-C3N4 particles allowed them to deposit in certain media and act as carriers for Pb release.

Carbon flux from hydrothermal skarn ore deposits and its potential impact to the environment

Wei Liu, Bo Wan

Summary: Magmatic-hydrothermal systems play a crucial role in transporting materials and potentially affecting Earth's long-term environment. This study investigates the duration of prograde metamorphism induced by fluid infiltration and the amount of carbon released by skarn ore deposits. The findings reveal that skarn ore deposits can efficiently decarbonize CO2 at a high rate, surpassing volcanism in different tectonic settings. The CO2 flux of skarn deposits increases over time and reaches a maximum value at the J/K boundary, providing an important previously unquantified source of outgassing in the subduction zone.

Modification of Archean lower crust of the North China Craton by magma underplating during the Mesozoic: Evidence from zircon U-Pb-Hf-O isotopes of granulite xenoliths

Dongya Zou, Hongfu Zhang

Summary: This study analyzes the U-Pb-Hf-O isotopes of zircons in felsic granulite xenoliths from the Fuxin late Cretaceous basalts in the North China Craton to evaluate the role of magma underplating in modifying the Archean lower crust. The results show that long-lived magma underplating occurred beneath the Fuxin region during the Mesozoic, with underplated magmas originating from the lithospheric mantle and later from the depleted asthenospheric mantle. This study concludes that magma underplating not only provided heat for remelting, but also added exotic material and weakened the lower crust, leading to its destruction.
