Summary: This review synthesized research evidence on the effect of ambient bright light (BL) on behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). The findings suggest that ambient BL has a positive effect on depressive symptoms and agitation in persons with dementia, but the evidence on other BPSD is mixed or limited. Further research is needed to explore the effect of ambient BL on BPSD with attention to lighting parameters, measurement approaches, and intervention fidelity.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to validate the Thai version of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire (NPI-Q) as a screening tool for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and examine the relationship between cognitive performance and BPSD in elderly individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT). The results showed that the Thai NPI-Q had good validity and reliability, and cognitive performance was significantly correlated with NPI-Q scores. Some individuals with aMCI may progress to probable dementia.

Summary: The study aimed to optimize and further study the discriminative ability and reliability of the BPSD assessment scale BPSD-DS II for individuals with Down syndrome (DS). Results showed significant changes in frequency and severity of anxious, sleep-related, irritable, apathetic, depressive, and eating/drinking behaviors among DS, DS+Q, and DS+AD groups. These changes may serve as early signals of Alzheimer's disease dementia in DS.

Summary: Neuropsychiatric or behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common in patients with dementia and should not be underestimated. This study examines the prevalence and natural history of BPSD in patients with behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The results show that BPSD affect a high percentage of dementia patients and have different profiles in the two types of dementia.

Summary: This study characterizes the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in different types of dementia in long-term care facilities. The results show that there are variations in symptom risks between different types of dementia, but aberrant motor behavior, agitation, and irritability are common symptoms among all types of dementia patients.

Summary: Preventive measures to limit the spread of COVID-19 have led to social isolation, negatively impacting the physical and mental health of older adults, especially those with dementia. This study found that certain behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) were more prevalent during the pandemic, with higher levels of night waking in the mild group and increased physical attacks in the moderate/severe group. These findings highlight the importance of screening and interventions for BPSD in dementia patients during COVID-19.

Summary: This study compared the behavioral and psychological symptoms between early-onset and late-onset Alzheimer's disease patients, and found that early-onset patients had a higher overall prevalence of symptoms and a later onset compared to late-onset patients. The manifestation of symptoms and sub-syndromes also differed between the two groups at different stages. However, there were no significant differences in the severity of symptoms.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of diabetes duration and glycemic control on the risk of incident dementia. The findings showed that individuals with diabetes have a higher risk of dementia compared to those with normal glucose levels, and this risk increases with longer duration of diabetes. Additionally, it was found that both longer diabetes duration and poor glycemic control were associated with the highest risk of dementia, highlighting the importance of considering both factors in dementia risk assessments for diabetic patients.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias can cause significant distress, impairment, and caregiver burden in aging populations due to the Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). Effective dementia care requires understanding both non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions for BPSD. It is important for clinicians to be familiar with treatment options, especially related to psychoactive medications, in this vulnerable population.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPS) and cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia. The results showed that patients with BPS had worse clinical dementia ratings, reduced psychomotor speed, higher modified CAA-SVD scores, and larger numbers of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs). Therefore, preventing these brain lesions may help mitigate the risk of BPS.

Summary: Opioids can alleviate breathlessness and improve the quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Recent studies suggest that regular oral opioid use can decrease the severity of breathlessness, and morphine or codeine show significant acute effects. Further research is needed to optimize prescription methods and minimize adverse effects.

Summary: The JSDT revised the proposal in 2020 to guide healthcare teams in providing the best healthcare management and care respecting the patient's will through advance care planning and shared decision making. This includes conservative kidney management for all end-stage kidney disease patients, regardless of terminal stage or dementia. The proposal is consensus-based rather than evidence-based, which means healthcare teams may not be legally exempt if implementing the policies results in the patient's death.
