Summary: This work provides an overview of environmental studies conducted in areas affected by dumpsites and nonsanitary landfills in Brazil, identifying main contaminants and assessing their environmental impact for guidance on intervention measures. The results reveal that Brazilian dumpsites are causing negative impacts on surrounding soils and water resources, posing ecological and public health risks that persist even after closure. Additionally, the study suggests the need for strict enforcement methods and monitoring plans to address this significant environmental problem in Brazil.

Summary: The study indicates that EDTA can affect the distribution of plutonium oxidation states, and time, pH, and ligand-to-metal ratio also play a role. EDTA mainly stabilizes the Pu(IV) oxidation state, but Pu(V)-EDTA may persist under environmentally-relevant conditions.

Summary: The study evaluated the influence of clay minerals on the retention of Zr(IV) in nuclear waste, and found three immobilization mechanisms including cation exchange, precipitation/crystallization, and chemical interaction. This is of significant importance for waste management and environmental risk control.

Summary: This study utilized multi-scale experimental methods to investigate the response of gas injection on Boom Clay gas transport, confirming soil expansion and fissure development during injection and their impact on permeability. Techniques such as mercury intrusion porosimetry and X-ray micro-tomography were used to quantify fissure volume and assess gas-entry pressure reduction and permeability increase after gas tests.

Summary: In this study, municipal solid waste (MSW) from landfills in Muscat Governorate was examined. It was found that approximately 50% of the weight of disposed waste was recyclable, and there were high levels of biodegradable organic material in MSW. The study also revealed that Muscat MSW has a high moisture content and significant oxide ratios. The findings suggest that almost half of Muscat's municipal solid waste can be recycled, and waste-to-energy technologies are feasible due to the high-energy content of the waste.

Summary: In the geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste in argillaceous rocks, studying the effectiveness of self-sealing and the reopening of fissures during gas injection is crucial for safety assessment. This paper presents experimental research in Boom Clay to evaluate the self-sealing capacity and repeatability of gas invasion. Results show that Boom Clay undergoes expansion and degradation during gas injection, but self-sealing leads to the recovery of initial water permeability, indicating good barrier integrity.

Summary: A three-dimensional numerical model was developed to investigate the regional groundwater flow patterns in the Xinchang site, which is a potential repository for high-level radioactive waste. The model revealed that the groundwater flows southward to Yuanyang Ditch and discharges from the east and south boundaries. Changes in precipitation, fault permeability, and connectivity have only localized impacts on the water table, while topography plays a major role in determining the regional groundwater flow.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of the radioactive isotope 94Nb generated in structural materials of nuclear reactors. The research reveals that the solubility of niobium is influenced by the solid phases in the process of disposing 94Nb waste using cementitious materials. The experimental results demonstrate the impact of pH value and calcium concentration on the solubility of niobium in simulated pore water.

Summary: The effective management of radioactive waste is crucial for the utilization of nuclear energy, and the UK's policy involves disposal in a deep underground geological disposal facility. The GDF will need to safely contain radioactive materials for hundreds of thousands of years, with a combination of natural and engineered barriers providing the necessary isolation. Further research on the performance of engineered barriers is essential for the long-term safety of the GDF post-closure.

Summary: This study established a framework for predicting the lifespan of hazardous waste landfills (HWLs) for the first time. The lifespan of HWLs was defined based on functional characteristics, and indicators and thresholds for life termination were confirmed through comprehensive analysis. Failure modes of core components affecting the lifespan of HWLs were identified using Failure Mode, Mechanism, and Effect Analysis (FMMEA). The performance degradation of HWLs was simulated using a process simulation method, and a life prediction framework was developed to increase prediction accuracy and provide a methodology for further research.

Summary: This study investigated the possibility of thermally decomposing tributyl phosphate (TBP), the spent extractant from the PUREX process, into hydrocarbons and phosphoric acid. It was found that under certain conditions, using recycled phosphoric acid, TBP can be efficiently and completely decomposed into butene, along with a significant amount of alkanes and alkenes. This study provides a viable method for processing the spent extractant in the PUREX process.

Summary: This study aims to develop a strategy for utilizing natural analogues in the UK's nuclear waste services' geological disposal facility program. The strategy emphasizes that natural analogue information and projects should be treated as part of knowledge management rather than a stagnant database. It is anticipated that integrating natural analogue information into the digital safety case can enhance transparency and facilitate the best utilization of the data.
