Ocean-plate stratigraphy (basalt, chert, clastics) of the Balcreuchan Group in the Ballantrae complex is repeated by layer-parallel thrusts to form duplex structures south of Bennane Head, similar to 5 km north of Ballantrae. Five tuff beds, all in chert, have similar U-Pb zircon ages of ca. 470 +/- 10 Ma. The geometrical polarity of the duplexes and the zircon ages provide new constraints on the tectonic evolution of the accretionary wedge of the Ballantrae complex. North westward thrusting of the duplexes suggests that subduction was from the northwest to the southeast, and this polarity at the leading edge of the main ophiolite body is consistent with the northward younging of the volcanic are rocks of the Ballantrae complex.

Occurrence and chemical composition of the Eoarchean carbonate rocks of the Nulliak supracrustal rocks in the Saglek Block of northeastern Labrador, Canada

Satoshi Yoshida, Akira Ishikawa, Shogo Aoki, Tsuyoshi Komiya

Summary: This study investigates the origin of some of the world's oldest carbonate rocks in the Eoarchean Nulliak supracrustal rocks in the Saglek Block of northeastern Labrador, Canada, and estimates the surface environmental conditions of the early Earth based on their occurrence and geochemistry. The geological occurrence of these carbonate rocks suggests formation around hydrothermal fields and near a continental margin.

Traces of intra-oceanic arcs recorded in sandstones of eastern Kazakhstan: implications from U-Pb detrital zircon ages, geochemistry, and Nd-Hf isotopes

Inna Safonova, Alina Perfilova, Olga Obut, Pavel Kotler, Shogo Aoki, Tsuyoshi Komiya, Bo Wang, Min Sun

Summary: This paper presents U-Pb detrital zircon ages, geochemical data, and Nd-Hf isotope data from sandstones of eastern Kazakhstan, suggesting a juvenile character of igneous rocks in the provenance and a derivation from one or more intra-oceanic arcs. The data from eastern Kazakhstan support the existence of an extended Pacific-type subduction system in the western Paleo-Asian Ocean during the Devonian-early Carboniferous time.

Experimental chondrite-water reactions under reducing and low-temperature hydrothermal conditions: Implications for incipient aqueous alteration in planetesimals

Sakiko Kikuchi, Takazo Shibuya, Mariko Abe, Katsuyuki Uematsu

Summary: The presence of hydrous minerals in carbonaceous chondrites provides important evidence for the existence of liquid water in parent asteroids. This study conducted experiments and calculations to investigate the alteration process and secondary mineral assemblages of chondritic rock. The results suggest that water-rock reactions at low temperatures may be responsible for the formation of secondary minerals, and the findings have implications for understanding the evolution of water in early solar system bodies.

Muscle systems and motility of early animals highlighted by cnidarians from the basal Cambrian

Xing Wang, Jean Vannier, Xiaoguang Yang, Lucas Leclere, Qiang Ou, Xikun Song, Tsuyoshi Komiya, Jian Han

Summary: Although there is little direct information available on the muscle systems of early animals, this study describes exceptionally preserved muscles in benthic olivooid medusozoans from the basal Cambrian, providing the oldest record of a muscle system in cnidarians. These muscles likely helped early Cambrian jellyfish to develop jet-propelled swimming within the water column.

The end of the isotopic evolution of atmospheric xenon

A. Ardoin, M. W. Broadley, M. Almayrac, G. Avice, D. J. Byrne, A. Tarantola, A. Leblanc, T. Saito, T. Komiya, T. Shibuya, B. Marty

Summary: Noble gases, specifically xenon, have been used as tracers to investigate physical processes over geological timescales. The isotopic composition of xenon has evolved until the Great Oxidation Event, after which it appeared to cease. Investigating xenon trapped in hydrothermal quartz from different formations around the Great Oxidation Event, the researchers found that xenon isotope fractionation stopped during a specific time window, coinciding with the disappearance of mass-independent fractionation of sulfur isotopes in the region. This finding suggests a connection between the rise in atmospheric oxygen and the cessation of xenon isotope fractionation.

Magnesium and zinc isotopic evidence for the involvement of recycled carbonates in the petrogenesis of Gaussberg lamproites, Antarctica

Jian-Qiang Liu, Li-Hui Chen, Xiao-Jun Wang, Xiao-Yu Zhang, Gang Zeng, Saskia Erdmann, David T. Murphy, Kenneth D. Collerson, Tsuyoshi Komiya, Lukas Krmicek

Summary: The study further examines the petrogenesis of Gaussberg lamproites using new Mg and Zn isotopic data, suggesting a source from recycled crustal materials containing sedimentary carbonates rather than post-magmatic alteration or crustal contamination. The involvement of subducted dolomite in the source of the lamproites can explain their anomalous Mg and Zn isotopic values.

Zircon trace-element compositions in Miocene granitoids in Japan: Discrimination diagrams for zircons in M-, I-, S-, and A-type granites

Yusuke Sawaki, Hisashi Asanuma, Shuhei Sakata, Mariko Abe, Takeshi Ohno

Summary: Detrital zircons show high resistance to alteration, allowing them to retain valuable information about their formation ages and parental magmas over time. By analyzing trace-element compositions of zircons in different types of granites, researchers can distinguish between M-, I-, S-, and A-type granites based on specific ratios such as Nb/P, Ta/P, Ce/P, Ce/Nd, as well as Sc/Yb ratios and Eu anomaly. These findings provide insights into the origins and characteristics of zircons in granitic rocks.

Evidence for Enrichment of Niobium-92 in the Outer Protosolar Disk

Yuki Hibiya, Tsuyoshi Iizuka, Hatsuki Enomoto, Takehito Hayakawa

Summary: In this study, the niobium-zirconium (Nb-Zr) isochron dating of Northwest Africa (NWA) 6704 is presented, which formed about 4562.76 million years ago with an initial Nb-92/Nb-93 ratio of (2.72 +/- 0.25) x 10(-5). This ratio is approximately 80% higher than values obtained from meteorites formed in the inner disk, suggesting that a significant proportion of solar Nb-92 was produced by a nearby core-collapse supernova (CCSN) and that the outer disk was more enriched in CCSN ejecta. The findings highlight the importance of NWA 6704 in mapping relative Nb-Zr ages of objects in the outer solar system onto the absolute timescale.

Late Triassic A-type granite boulders in Lower Cretaceous conglomerate of the Hida belt, Japan: Their origin and bearing on the Yamato tectonic line in Far East Asia

Yukio Isozaki, Yusuke Sawaki, Hideki Iwano, Takafumi Hirata, Keitaro Kunugiza

Summary: This study analyzes the geochemistry and U-Pb age of zircons in the large granitoid boulders in the Jinzu Group in order to identify the origin of the Hida belt in central Japan. The results suggest that these boulders have typical A-type granite geochemistry and a Late Triassic age of approximately 220 Ma. The boulders are more likely to originate from the Hida belt rather than the eastern Songliao block in China, indicating the past occurrence of A-type granite in the Hida belt.

Trace-element composition of zircon in Kofu and Tanzawa granitoids, Japan: Quantitative indicator of sediment incorporated in parent magma

Yusuke Sawaki, Hisashi Asanuma, Shuhei Sakata, Mariko Abe, Takeshi Ohno

Summary: Zircon is an important mineral for geochronologic research, and its isotopic ratios and trace elements can provide information about parent magmas. In this study, the researchers focused on sediment involvement during granitoid formation and found that the Nb/P and Ta/P ratios in zircon can be used as indicators of sediment incorporation. Additionally, the Yb/Gd ratios and Ce/P contents in zircon respond to sediment involvement.

New materials of multicellular algae from the earliest Cambrian Kuanchuanpu biota in South China

Qing-Qin Tang, Ya-Juan Zheng, Song Qin, Yin-Chu Wang, Xiao-Guang Yang, Xing Wang, Jie Sun, Kentaro Uesugi, Tsuyoshi Komiya, Jian Han

Summary: The Kuanchuanpu biota from the basal Cambrian in South China has provided valuable insights into the divergent evolution of animal phyla in the early Cambrian ocean. In this study, a new taxon of calathiform alga, Calathophycus irregulatus Tang gen. et sp. nov., and an indeterminate alga were reported from the Kuanchuanpu biota, indicating a certain diversity of algae at the beginning of the Cambrian. The findings also suggest the need for reevaluation of spherical fossils previously interpreted as animal embryo cleavage stages.
