[1] UHP rocks commonly form and exhume during the transition from oceanic subduction to continental collision. Their exhumation in subduction channels depends on the balance between down-channel shear traction and up-channel buoyancy. Thermal-mechanical upper-mantle-scale numerical models are used to investigate how variations in material properties of the subducting continental margin affect this balance. Changes in shear traction leading to crustal decoupling/detachment are investigated by varying the onset of strain weakening, thermal parameters, and convergence velocity. Variations in buoyancy force are investigated by modifying subducted material density and volume. The model results are interpreted in terms of the exhumation number E, which expresses the role of the pressure gradient, channel thickness, effective viscosity, and subduction velocity. Peak metamorphic conditions, exhumation velocity, and timing of exhumation are temporally and spatially variable and are sensitive to the evolution of E. The models reproduce natural PTt constraints and indicate that neither slab breakoff nor surface erosion is required for UHP exhumation.

Summary: This study investigated the poorly studied hinterland region of the Southern Andean Cordillera in the Western Domain of the Magallanes Fold-and-Thrust Belt, revealing Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous tectonic activities through new detrital zircon U-Pb ages. The findings provide insights into the initial phases of the Andean Orogeny and the along-strike connection of mylonite belts in a continent-verging thrust structure during the closure of the Rocas Verdes back-arc marginal basin.

Dating Continental Subduction Beneath the Samail Ophiolite: Garnet, Zircon, and Rutile Petrochronology of the As Sifah Eclogites, NE Oman

Joshua M. Garber, Matthew Rioux, Michael P. Searle, Andrew R. C. Kylander-Clark, Bradley R. Hacker, Jeff D. Vervoort, Clare J. Warren, Andrew J. Smye

Summary: The study of high-pressure eclogites in Oman's Saih Hatat window utilized various radiometric dating results to determine the timing and cause of continental subduction. The findings suggest a single metamorphic event in the As Sifah rocks sourced from the Arabian continental margin, with no evidence for a 110 Ma event or SW-dipping subduction. The data indicate the subduction of the As Sifah unit at rates similar to other continental HP bodies, followed by two stages of cooling and exhumation.

Critical metal enrichment in crustal melts: The role of metamorphic mica

Barbara E. Kunz, Clare J. Warren, Frances E. Jenner, Nigel B. W. Harris, Tom W. Argles

Summary: This study investigates the enrichment mechanism of metals such as Li, Be, V, Co, Nb, In, Cs, Sn, Ta, and W in metamorphic processes. By analyzing muscovite and biotite from metasediment-hosted samples, the study reveals the preferential incorporation of these metals into mica minerals and their release during crustal melting. The findings highlight the importance of higher-temperature melting, particularly biotite breakdown reactions, for the mobilization of these critical metals.
