Summary: Elevated social fear in infancy is associated with later social maladjustment and psychopathology. This study found that increased hair cortisol concentration (HCC) in infants was related to increased distress vocalizations during a Stranger Approach task, while steeper diurnal cortisol slope was associated with fewer distress vocalizations. Economic strain did not affect the relationship between cortisol measures and social fear responses.

Summary: This study compared cortisol levels in guide dogs and dogs trained as guides but became companions. Results showed that guide dogs had consistently higher cortisol levels than companion dogs. Social isolation and exposure to gunshot sound did not cause any changes. This suggests that being a guide dog is associated with higher basal cortisol levels.

Summary: A strong correlation was found between salivary cortisone and serum cortisol in patients with adrenal incidentalomas, suggesting that salivary cortisone can be used as an alternative sampling method for measuring serum cortisol.

Summary: The study found a positive correlation between diurnal salivary cortisol and hair cortisol concentration in children. Additionally, an increase in effortful control scores was associated with a higher likelihood of having high hair cortisol levels, although this association slightly weakened after adjustments. No clear associations were found between temperament dimensions and stress-related biomarkers.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic value of salivary cortisol and cortisone in patients with suspected hypercortisolism. The results showed that late-night salivary cortisol (LNSC) was not sufficiently sensitive or specific to be used for screening patients with suspected hypercortisolism, while late-night salivary cortisone seemed to be a promising alternative.

Summary: The study found that noradrenergic arousal strengthens fear memory expression, while hydrocortisone has no significant effect on fear memory. These results have important implications for understanding the significance of the overgeneralization of conditioned fear in mental disorders.

Summary: The study compared different methods of salivary collection and found that Salivette, passive drool, and SalivaBio all yielded comparable concentrations of salivary cortisol and cortisone, which were stable under conditions replicating home collection. The SaliPac device was found to be an acceptable option for salivary sampling in young children.

Summary: Understanding the impact of stress on fear learning is valuable for understanding stress-related disorders. This study found that stress impaired the acquisition of fear, particularly in individuals with greater cortisol responses. However, stress did not significantly influence the generalization of fear. These findings suggest that stress alters fear acquisition via cortisol-related mechanisms and may help explain the alteration of fear memories in stress-related disorders.

Summary: The study found that ADA and Hp in saliva can serve as inflammatory biomarkers in pigs, with saliva sampling being less stressful and easier than blood sampling. Further research in commercial settings with larger sample sizes is recommended.

Summary: Salivary cortisol dysrhythmias have been reported in some studies assessing HPA axis function in Huntington's disease, but not all. This study aimed to evaluate hair and salivary cortisol concentrations in individuals with premanifest HD compared to healthy controls, finding no significant differences between the groups. Hair cortisol concentrations were significantly associated with disease outcomes in premanifest HD individuals, suggesting a potential disease marker that should be explored further.

Summary: Monitoring chronic stress in pigs is important for animal welfare and farmers. This study investigated the use of saliva as a non-invasive tool for monitoring chronic stress in pigs. The results showed that chronic stress alters the porcine salivary proteome, and the affected proteins could be potential biomarkers for optimizing rearing conditions and identifying welfare issues.

Summary: Investigations of therapy dog welfare have primarily focused on physiological and behavioral measures, but have not fully considered the continuum of welfare. This review proposes using objective measurements of the HPA axis and behavioral observations to evaluate positive welfare in therapy dogs. The role of oxytocin and questionnaire data are also discussed. However, to date, no studies have comprehensively measured these factors to assess therapy dog welfare.

Summary: The study found that animal-assisted therapy (AAT) did not have an impact on respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) amplitudes, but individuals showed greater RSA withdrawal in Sessions 4 and 12 compared to Session 1 regardless of treatment condition. Additionally, better RSA regulation predicted improved PTSD symptoms after treatment.

Summary: The study found that combining AAT with TF-CBT treatment for maltreated youth with PTSD did not significantly enhance treatment outcomes and may have even attenuated improvement in some cases. This suggests that the inclusion of AAT in this population is not currently recommended based on the clinical outcomes examined.
