Summary: This study evaluated the burden and coping strategies of family caregivers for people diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Results showed that caregivers of patients with severe symptoms experienced higher burden, while urban caregivers had better coping abilities. Higher coping level of family caregivers was associated with lesser burden in social and family, mental, and spouse relationships.

Summary: Family accommodation behaviors are common among family members of OCD patients, especially those living with the patient. Different types of obsessions can lead to varying levels of family accommodation, while the perception of all compulsive symptoms is associated with increased levels of family accommodation.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review on the relationships between childhood trauma and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) severity. The results showed a significant relationship between exposure to childhood trauma and OCS severity in both clinical and non-clinical populations. It was also found that a range of childhood trauma types, rather than a single type, was associated with OCD.

Summary: This study found that levels of insight may change during the natural course of OCD over a four-year period. Patients with poor insight showed the most variability in their level of insight. Improvement in insight scores was significantly associated with improvement in OCD severity, but not with changes in quality of life scores. Changes in insight in the first two years were not predictive of OCD severity or quality of life at a four-year follow-up.

Summary: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heritable, polygenic disorder with contributions from both common and rare genetic variants. Genetics play an important role in the susceptibility to OCD, with discrete OCD symptom dimensions having both shared and unique genetic risks. Genome-wide studies show that OCD shares genetic risk with its comorbid conditions.

Summary: This study found that childhood maltreatment has both direct and indirect effects on obsessive-compulsive symptoms, with the indirect effect mediated by the behavioral inhibition system. The findings highlight the role of the behavioral inhibition system in linking childhood maltreatment to obsessive-compulsive symptomology.

Summary: Obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) commonly occur in patients treated with clozapine and can significantly affect subjective wellbeing. This study found that OCS severity had a negative impact on wellbeing scores, independent of depressive and psychotic symptoms. However, OCS did not impair general functioning. Obsessional thinking and hoarding behavior, rather than compulsions, were specifically associated with decreased wellbeing, possibly due to the nature of the compulsions.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the presence of intimate security among OCD outpatients and its relationship with clinical and sociodemographic variables, as well as quality of life. The study included 79 OCD patients out of 100 individuals assessed, who were evaluated using the SCID-5 CV, Y-BOCS, ISMI Scale, and WHOQOLBREF. The results revealed a strong correlation between intimate security and lower quality of life and severity of OCD symptoms. Avoidance behavior, psychological health, and social relationship domains were identified as independent factors related to intimate security. Further research with larger samples is needed to understand the specific development and impact of intimate security in people with OCD.

Summary: Automatically detecting compulsive hand washing using wearable devices is an important step toward developing sensor-based assessments and interventions for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This study demonstrates that enacted compulsive hand washing can be distinguished from routine hand washing based on sensor data analysis, although specificity is low.

Summary: Neuroimaging studies suggest a neuropathological process in bipolar disorder. Retinal neurodegenerative changes can be measured by optical coherence tomography. Ganglion cell complex thickness in bipolar disorder patients was thicker compared to healthy controls, especially in the perifoveal areas, indicating potential for monitoring neurodegenerative changes.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the therapeutic effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on cognitive impairment and the levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glial cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). The results showed that rTMS treatment significantly improved depressive and cognitive symptoms in patients with treatment resistant depression (TRD). Although the levels of BDNF and GDNF increased after the treatment, the differences were not significant.
