Summary: Advertising has a significant impact on consumer decision-making, and marketing for unhealthy products may contribute to health disparities. This study examined the disparities in outdoor branded advertising for harmful products in socioeconomically and racially diverse areas in San Francisco and Oakland. The findings suggest that low-income neighborhoods are disproportionately exposed to unhealthy branded advertisements.

Summary: This study found that non-white, low-income, and low-education adult and teen respondents were exposed to higher levels of advertisements for sugar-sweetened and non-nutritive sweetened beverages compared to white, high-income, and high-education respondents. Demographic and socio-economic groups with a higher prevalence of obesity were found to be exposed to significantly more advertisements for these beverages.

Summary: This study compares traditional post-and-platform playgrounds with innovatively designed playgrounds in terms of their influence on use and physical activity. Innovative playgrounds, with diverse surface types, naturalized and planted areas, open-ended structures, loose equipment, and a variety of features, attract more users and generate more physical activity. These characteristics should be prioritized in future playground designs and renovations, especially in low-income neighborhoods.

Summary: To date, the higher COVID-19 case rates in Black and Latinx communities in the US are linked to more hospitalizations and deaths. This study focused on Chicago neighborhoods and found that disparities in case rates may be due to adverse health outcomes associated with poverty and other social determinants of health, or greater morbidity and mortality resulting from equivalent infection rates. The survey revealed that neighboring ZIP codes with varying case rates had similar exposure to SARS-CoV-2, suggesting that social determinants of health and related comorbidities play a role in driving COVID-19 disparities.

Summary: The study found that obesity prevalence in the USA has been steadily increasing since 2007, with significant decreases in obesity rates among non-Hispanic black women in the past decade. However, obesity rates have increased among Mexican-American men, boys, and girls, surpassing or equaling non-Hispanic black groups. Differences in biological, behavioral, and sociocultural factors contribute to racial/ethnic disparities in obesity.

Summary: This study used data from the 2016 National Health Interview Survey to explore differences in access to and ability to afford care among adults with vestibular vertigo based on race/ethnicity, income, and insurance type. The findings show that African Americans with vestibular vertigo have higher odds of delayed care due to lack of transportation, while Hispanic ethnicity is associated with decreased odds of skipping medication doses and asking for lower-cost medication. Adults with public insurance have lower odds of delayed care due to worry about cost, but higher odds of delayed care due to lack of transportation.

This study found that the distinction between message contradiction and complexity is not reflected in laypersons' perceptions. Summary: The ability to cook at home is important for college students, especially those facing food insecurity, as it can improve their diet quality and reduce costs. However, barriers such as time constraints and limited resources may hinder their meal preparation skills. This study used a mixed-methods approach to assess the relationships between food security, motivation, and meal preparation skills among college students. It found that students with food insecurity had lower meal preparation skills and perceived ability to consume a healthy diet. Focus groups suggested that in-person and online cooking classes, information cards in the food pantry, and incentives could help improve home-meal preparation skills among college students.
