Summary: This study investigates the impact of oral anticoagulant (OAC) and adenosine diphosphate inhibitor (ADPi) therapies on short-term outcomes after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The results show that patients using vitamin K antagonists (VKA) have a higher case-fatality rate compared to patients without OAC. However, patients using direct OACs (DOAC) have lower case-fatality rates, and ADPi is not associated with the outcomes studied.

Summary: The study used data from the American Heart Association to describe discharge antithrombotic treatment patterns among stroke patients. It found that half of the patients were discharged on aspirin monotherapy, while the other half chose alternative treatments such as clopidogrel monotherapy or dual antiplatelet therapy.

Summary: Antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and/or clopidogrel has a dual effect in traumatic brain injury, increasing the risk of intracerebral haemorrhage while also providing neuroprotection.

Summary: Among patients with rheumatic heart disease-associated atrial fibrillation, vitamin K antagonist therapy leads to a lower rate of a composite of cardiovascular events or death compared to rivaroxaban therapy, without a higher rate of bleeding.

Summary: The study demonstrates that serum Apelin-13 concentration may serve as a prognostic biomarker for severe traumatic brain injury. The decline in serum Apelin-13 concentration is closely associated with increasing severity and can independently predict short-term mortality in patients with sTBI.

Summary: Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) is a major cause of death in children, often accompanied by serious extracranial injury (SEI). This study analyzed the clinical characteristics and initial presentations of SEI, and found that sTBI children with SEI had a higher in-hospital mortality rate. However, SEI itself was not an independent predictor of mortality.

Summary: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) potentially serving as a low-cost, objective predictor of inflammation and marker of secondary injury associated with neutrophil activation.

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of acute kidney injury (AKI) on mortality in patients with isolated traumatic brain injury (TBI) and identify associated risk factors. The results showed that 10.6% of patients developed AKI, which was significantly associated with increased mortality. Age, hemodynamic instability, rhabdomyolysis, trauma-associated coagulopathy, and transfusion of packed red-blood-cell concentrates were identified as the main risk factors for AKI in isolated TBI patients.

Summary: The study found that traumatic brain injury mortality remained relatively stable, while spinal cord injury mortality increased significantly from 2014 to 2018. Males, rural residents, and older individuals had higher adjusted mortality rate ratios for both TBI and SCI. Motor vehicle crashes and falls were the leading causes of TBI mortality, while falls were the most important external cause of SCI death across all ages.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the association between blood caspase-8 concentrations and mortality in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. Results showed that surviving patients had differences in age, Glasgow Coma Scale, disease severity score, head CT findings, intracranial pressure, and serum caspase-8 concentrations compared to non-surviving patients.

Summary: This study found that lymphopenia on admission is associated with poor outcomes in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. Lymphopenic patients are more likely to die, develop pneumonia, have longer hospital stays, and require more healthcare resources. This suggests that routine complete blood count with differential for all TBI patients may help predict patient outcomes and guide care.
