Management effects on fungal assemblages in irrigation ponds: are biodiversity conservation and the control of phytopathogens compatible?

The study of fungi and fungus-like organisms in irrigation ponds has applied interest since waterborne phytopathogens can disperse through the irrigation system to the crop roots. We tested the hypothesis that managing irrigation ponds to maintain high levels of biodiversity could entail agronomic benefits through the control of phytopathogens. The structure of assemblages of fungi and fungus-like taxa were characterized and compared using samples taken from two strata depths (superficial and deep). This was done in four management/ water source pond groups of southeastern Spain: groundwater-fed ponds with submerged aquatic vegetation stands (untreated SAV ponds); groundwater-fed ponds submitted to low and high doses of copper sulfate, and ponds fed with recycled urban wastewater bearing intermediate doses of copper sulfate. Higher density and diversity of fungi, besides a singular assemblage composition, were found in untreated SAV ponds compared to treated ponds, particularly for samples taken in the deep stratum. Phytopathogenicity of the main phytopathogens detected (Pythium isolates) was generally low and rather unaffected by the type of pond management. However, much evidence from potential unsuitable hosts (submerged macrophyte species) and fungal composition (related to the presence of potential pathogen antagonists) suggests that managing ponds to preserve submerged vegetation might prove useful for controlling root rot diseases.

Climate-induced plasticity in leaf traits of riparian plants

Summary: This study investigated the effects of climate and soil conditions on the plasticity of leaf traits of riparian vegetation and predicted the consequences for stream food webs. The results showed that aridity had a major influence on leaf trait plasticity, with different patterns for different plant functional types. Leaf quality of deciduous species may decrease, while that of evergreen species may increase, which could have significant impacts on ecosystem functioning.

Key plant species and detritivores drive diversity effects on instream leaf litter decomposition more than functional diversity: A microcosm study

Ecology and evolution of competitive trait variation in natural phytoplankton communities under selection

Summary: Competition for limited resources plays a crucial role in shaping ecological communities. The minimum resource requirements (R*s) of species can predict competitive outcomes and undergo adaptive evolution in simple communities. In this study, natural phytoplankton communities were subjected to different types of resource limitation in outdoor mesocosms. The results showed that R*s were good predictors of species changes in relative abundance and the dominant species, Desmodesmus armatus, displayed evolutionary changes in R*s under resource limitation, indicating the potential for adaptive trait change to modify competitive outcomes in natural communities.

Alder stands promote N-cycling but not leaf litter mass loss in Mediterranean streams flowing through pine plantations

Summary: The abandonment of traditional farming and pastures in the Mediterranean basin led to ambitious afforestation programs, resulting in a drastic transformation of the landscape. The potential ecological impacts of these programs on recipient ecosystems were not considered. In this study, the researchers assessed the effects of pine plantations on stream ecosystem functioning and found that the presence of black alder in the riparian zone and/or as leaf litter within the stream mitigated the impacts. Thinning of pine plantations combined with the planting of native deciduous species, such as alder, is recommended to alleviate the effects on Mediterranean streams.
