Mechanical circulatory support for early surgical repair of postinfarction ventricular septal defect with cardiogenic shock

Maximilian Vondran, Mahmoud S. Wehbe, Christian Etz, Tamer Ghazy, Ardawan J. Rastan, Michael A. Borger, Thomas Schroeter

Summary: This study showed that pre-operative implantation of ECLS tended to improve the outcome of early primary surgical pVSD repair in patients with CS, while the need for a post-operative MCS device was associated with a worse 30-day survival.

Sexual Quality of Life in Men <60 Years Old after Coronary Bypass Surgery

Tamer Ghazy, Erwin Haeberle, Utz Kappert, Stephan Petzold, Katrin Plotze, Ahmed Mashhour, Klaus Matschke, Ahmed Ouda

Summary: Middle-aged men experience decreased sexual quality of life after coronary artery bypass grafting. Preoperative sexual quality of life, general health, and higher-quality counseling positively affect postoperative sexual quality of life, whereas sternal pain, fear, and erectile dysfunction play a negative role. Pre- and postoperative care guidelines should be improved. Further prospective large cohort studies for males and females are required.

Does Preoperative Sinus Rhythm Influence Surgical Ablation's Perioperative Safety in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation?

Maximilian Vondran, Tamer Ghazy, Marc Albert, Henning Warnecke, Mirko Doss, Andreas Liebold, Edgar Eszlari, Etem Caliskan, Taoufik Ouarrak, Nicolas Doll, Jochen Senges, Thorsten Hanke, Ardawan J. Rastan

Summary: Simultaneous surgical ablation therapy for AF patients presenting in sinus rhythm before cardiac surgery is safe, with low perioperative risk profile and should be carried out with almost no exceptions.

Infrared Thermographic Imaging of Chest Wall Perfusion in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

Stefan Rasche, Christian Kleiner, Jens Mueller, Antje Rost, Tamer Ghazy, Katrin Ploetze, Ronald Tetzlaff, Klaus Matschke, Olimpiu Bota

Summary: Coronary artery disease is a leading cause of death worldwide, and coronary artery bypass graft is the main treatment method. In this study, infrared thermography was used to observe 42 patients, and it was found that the surface temperature of the chest wall significantly dropped after harvesting the internal mammary artery, but returned to normal after 24 hours.

Influence of cardioplegic solution on incidence of delirium after CABG surgery: Use of Calafiore blood cardioplegia versus HTK - Bretschneider - solution in a single-center retrospective analysis from 2017 to 2021

Marc Irqsusi, Dominik Loos, Kai Dielmann, Rabia Ramzan, Hinnerk Wulf, Tamer Ghazy, Sebastian Vogt, Ardawan J. Rastan

Summary: The study evaluated the incidence of delirium after coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) and compared the effects of different cardioplegic solutions. The results showed that although there was no significant difference in delirium status between the groups, the choice of cardioplegic solution influenced the delirium rate and duration of intensive care stay.

Combined Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: A Hybrid Concept for Patients with Mitral Valve and Coronary Pathologies

Martin Moscoso-Luduena, Maximilian Vondran, Marc Irqsusi, Holger Nef, Ardawan J. Rastan, Tamer Ghazy

Summary: The feasibility of hybrid percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (MIMVS) was evaluated in patients with concomitant coronary and mitral disease. Ten patients, with a median age of 75 years, underwent MIMVS and PCI with a 100% success rate. There were no postoperative myocardial infarctions or strokes, but complications such as delirium and bleeding occurred. The 30-day survival rate was 100%. The study suggests that a hybrid approach can be feasible in patients with both mitral valve and single vessel coronary disease.

Summary: This article reports a case of STEMI caused by a giant right atrial myxoma combined with PFO and describes the emergency treatment and surgical removal of the myxoma. It suggests that emergency echocardiography should be performed on acute coronary syndrome patients to prevent unexpected situations.
