In this work, the chemical profile of 43 commercial samples of tablets for male erectile dysfunction (Viagra (R), Cialis (R), Lazar (R), Libiden (R), Maxfil (R), Plenovit (R), Potent 75 (R), Rigix (R), Vimax (R), Pramil (R) 75 and Pramil (R)) and 65 counterfeit samples (Viagra and Cialis) were obtained from UPLC-MS data. Methanol extracts of crushed tablets were investigated by ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) with diode array detection (DAD) coupled with eletrospray ionization in the positive ion mode (ESI(+)) quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-Tof) mass spectrometry (MS). A validated method was employed for the simultaneous determination of sildenafil citrate (SLD) and tadalafil (TAD). The ultra-chromatograms obtained with method provide high resolution of MS, and are a quick (less to 1.5 min) and reliable tool in the distinction between authentic and counterfeit tablets. It was observed in most cases the presence of other active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) than specified on the package (TAD and SLD). Additionally, high concentrations of TAD and SLD were detected in counterfeit samples when compare with observed values for a typical commercial product. Chemometric methods were employed and the samples were grouped in five groups as function of API content. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Analysis of Gliricidia sepium Leaves by MALDI Mass Spectrometry Imaging

Ana Claudia Hertel Pereira, Ana Carolina Auer, Lauro Biedel, Camila Medeiros de Almeida, Wanderson Romao, Denise Coutinho Endringer

Summary: The study investigates the potential use of Gliricidia sepium as a raw material for natural cosmetics. It examines the chemical composition, antioxidant potential, antimicrobial action, and toxicity of the plant. The study also explores the use of MALDI MS and MALDI MSI techniques to analyze the spatial distribution of phytochemicals on the leaf surface. The results show that G. sepium leaves contain polyphenols and tannins, with a higher flavonoid content in the methanolic extract. Several compounds with potential cosmetic applications, such as kaempferol, isorhamnetin, and fatty acids, are identified on the leaf surface. The extracts exhibit antioxidant and antimicrobial properties without cytotoxicity.

Fernanda E. Pinto, Victor R. Fonseca, Lindamara M. Souza, Luciana A. Terra, Sreedhar Subramanian, Sebastien Simon, Johan Sjoblom, Thieres M. Pereira, Valdemar Lacerda, Wanderson Romao

Summary: Negative ion-mode electrospray coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry allows for high resolution and accurate ionization of polar constituents. This study characterized different asphaltene subfractions obtained through precipitation and adsorption, estimating solubility parameters and revealing a higher number of polar species in certain subfractions with a more aromatic profile. The study also found that species containing multiple heteroatoms showed higher solubility parameters, impacting the solubility of subfractions.
