Summary: This study examines the adoption of Global Good Agricultural Practices (GlobalGAP) among small-scale pineapple farmers in Ghana and the heterogeneous effects of adoption on income due to farm size economies. The findings suggest that GlobalGAP adoption decreases net income for farms growing less than 1 ha of pineapples, while it increases net income for farms growing more than 1 ha of pineapples. It is recommended that extension and other interventions targeting pineapple farmers in Ghana should focus on those who are willing and able to grow more than 1 ha of pineapples.

Summary: This study assesses the adoption of food safety measures by milk producers in Sri Lanka and finds a moderate level of adoption. Production systems, training, and subsidies are important factors affecting the adoption rate. Bridging the knowledge gap through training and providing financial incentives are needed to improve compliance with food safety practices.

Summary: Food labels are crucial in reducing inefficiencies caused by information asymmetry. This study focuses on food safety information labels, such as certification and traceability labels, in China and explores producer preferences and adoption behavior. The research constructs a profile of food labels with different safety attributes and analyzes the willingness and adoption behavior of pig farmers in Zhejiang Province. Results show that farmers prefer labels indicating place of origin and organic/green certification, while having a negative attitude towards third-party conformity certification. The preferences for food safety labels vary among farmers, with a small percentage willing to adopt traceability labels in their production.

Summary: Weak and inefficient institutional arrangements have been identified as a major cause of the slow pace of agricultural growth in developing countries. This study examines the perceptions of farmers in Uganda on institutions and their roles in Sustainable Crop Intensification (SCI). Based on data collected from 135 rice and potato-producing households, farmers highly value institutional contributions to SCI. However, they perceive formal institutions as ineffective and consider informal farmer's institutions to be the most relevant for providing financial resources and meeting livelihood needs.

Summary: This study examines the impacts of small-scale farmers on food security enhancement. The findings suggest that small-scale farmers with natural/physical capital have positive effects on agricultural productivity and food income, while small-scale farmers with financial capital have negative effects on food security. The study recommends cultivating high-value crops, participating in income-generating activities, and providing agricultural credits.

Summary: Food safety is crucial for human well-being and sustainable development. This study examines the relationship between smallholder dairy farmers' adoption of food safety standards and a country's ability to export agri-food products. It also investigates the role of supply chain learning and value addition in this relationship. The findings highlight the importance of compliance with food safety standards and suggest implications for policymakers.

Summary: This study investigates the reasons for the adoption of species mixtures in food grain production through qualitative expert interviews with nine farmers. The main factors identified for adoption include perceived performance of mixtures compared to sole crops, suitability within the farm context, challenges and opportunities in mixture management, knowledge and technology required, and quality standards in the food value chain.

Summary: Certification and standards play a crucial role in implementing accountability in food system governance. This paper introduces a new perspective on accountability within the tripartite standards regime, emphasizing power relations and knowledge creation as fundamental dimensions. By examining the example of IP-Suisse, it identifies multiple contradictory power and knowledge processes unfolding within the agri-environmental governance assemblage.

Summary: This study examines the association between various adaptation stages and their determinants among rainfed farmers in Pakistan, finding that farmers' perceptions of climate change align with historical data. Training on climate risk management and digital agriculture extension services have a significant impact on adaptation stages, while factors like off-farm income and education also play important roles. Accurate climate risk perceptions are crucial for the planning and implementation of adaptations, emphasizing the importance of providing timely and reliable information to support sound adaptation strategies for rainfed farmers.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of institutional trust on consumers' perceptions of food safety and healthiness, as well as repurchase intention for certified traceable fresh food. The results showed that trust in government, certification organizations, food producers, and retailers positively influenced food safety perception. Trust in certification organizations and food producers directly affected food healthiness perception and repurchase intention. Trust in government and food retailers did not have a direct influence. These findings provide practical suggestions for marketers to enhance consumers' perceptions and repurchase intention through institutional trust.

Summary: Organic grains are crucial for the organic food industry, but low adoption rates of organic grain farming in the U.S. are limiting sector growth. The industry stakeholders are urging producers to increase domestic organic grain production, while research and extension efforts are needed to understand the motivations and challenges of farmers adopting organic grain farming.

Summary: Food waste composting, as a safe alternative to hazardous agrochemicals, can prevent human health hazards and environmental degradation. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing farmers' adoption of food waste composting. Through face-to-face interviews and structured questionnaires, empirical data were collected from 399 farmers in China. The results showed that the perceived usefulness of food waste compost, awareness of consequences, social influence, anticipated guilt, and attitude significantly impacted food waste composting intention.

Summary: Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) is a set of locally adapted soil fertility technologies and practices aimed at improving soil fertility, crop productivity and income for smallholder farmers. Adoption of core ISFM technologies is associated with increased labor demand and income from crops, but the impact on household welfare varies depending on farmers' income diversification strategies.

Summary: As of 2020, the world has around 290 million hectares of planted forests, with 131 million hectares being monoculture forests. Monoculture forests provide timber but lack biodiversity and are more vulnerable to disturbances compared to diverse planted forests. Scientific evidence shows that functionally and species diverse planted forests are more resilient and provide greater ecosystem services. Promoting diverse planted forests requires raising awareness, incentivizing diversity in afforestation programs, developing new wood-based products, investing in research, and expanding the evidence base in under-represented regions.

Summary: This study finds that the core practices of Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) and their combinations can improve land and labor productivity, as well as increase net crop value. Despite higher labor demand, the joint use of all three practices has the greatest effects. Additionally, the study suggests that the combination of organic fertilizer with improved seeds may be more beneficial compared to combinations with inorganic fertilizer.

Summary: The study estimated the relationship between EFB mulching and yields, soil properties in smallholder oil palm plantations, and analyzed the determinants of smallholders' EFB application. Results showed that regional EFB supply and farmers' wealth were correlated with smallholder EFB mulching, which was associated with higher yields and SOC contents. Promoting EFB mulching as best management practice could contribute to more sustainable oil palm systems.

Summary: In most of Sub-Saharan Africa, agricultural extension models have become more decentralized and participatory, relying on effective farmer-to-farmer learning. The study found that farmer-to-farmer extension and video intervention can increase adoption and knowledge of complex technology packages, especially for farmers not actively participating in extension activities. The results suggest that additional video intervention has a reinforcing effect on information diffusion and promotes adoption of integrated packages among farmers.

Summary: Payments for ecosystem services (PES) can encourage land owners to manage their land in a biodiversity-friendly way. Little knowledge exists about which incentives are most likely to generate desired landscape patterns. A study with Indonesian oil palm farmers found that both size threshold payment and agglomeration payment were similarly effective in the absence of communication, but communication increased conservation outcomes only under the size threshold payment.
