The Changing Landscape of Legume Products Available in Australian Supermarkets

Summary: Evidence suggests that regular dietary inclusion of legumes is beneficial for human and planetary health. In Australia, there is a lack of legume consumption, but innovative legume products have the potential to help integrate legumes into regular dietary patterns for consumers. The number of legume products on the market has almost doubled from 2019 to 2021, with a significant growth in legume snacks, and the majority of these products meet nutrient profiling criteria and are good sources of dietary fiber and protein. Nutrition and health claims related to dietary fiber, gluten-free, protein, vegan/vegetarian, plant-based/plant protein, and environmental sustainability have also increased on legume products, showing a trend towards more health-conscious and environmentally friendly options.

New Straw Coating Material for Improving the Slow-Release Performance of Fertilizers

Summary: In this study, cellulose was extracted from agricultural waste to produce a new straw coating material called ethyl cellulose (EC). The slow-release properties of EC-coated urea (EU) and its absorption and utilization by plants were evaluated. The surface of EU formed a smooth film, with an initial nutrient release rate of only 37.91% compared to uncoated fertilizer. Plants cultivated with EU showed a 17.69% increase in nitrogen content and a 61.29% reduction in leached nitrogen, indicating that EU can minimize nitrogen waste and continuously supply nutrients to crops. Therefore, the application of EU can be a practical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable alternative to nitrogen fertilizers.

Commentary: Solving the Cassandra complex: Improving actionability of predictions

Summary: Discussions on predictions in medicine often draw parallels to Cassandra from Greek mythology, who had the power of prophecy but was ignored. Cardiac surgery patients have an increased risk of postoperative pulmonary complications. Several risk-stratification instruments exist that use preoperative measurements to predict cardiac surgery risk, with independently validated nomograms available for risk stratification.

Changing Food Consumption and Nutrition Intake in Kazakhstan

Summary: This study investigated the changes in food consumption and nutrition intake in Kazakhstan from 2001 to 2018. The findings showed a significant increase in per capita food consumption during this period, with a decrease in the consumption of crops, vegetables, and milk. Meat consumption was similar in both urban and rural areas, but there were differences in other food consumption between these areas. The changes in food consumption quantity and structure also had an impact on nutrient intake and the proportion of nutrients, with per capita energy intake increasing remarkably in national, urban, and rural areas.

Improving fast auto-focus with event polarity

Summary: This paper introduces a new high-speed and accurate event-based focusing algorithm by investigating the symmetrical relationship between event polarities and proposing an event-based focus evaluation function based on the principles of event cameras and the imaging model. Comprehensive experiments on the public event-based autofocus dataset (EAD) demonstrate the robustness of the model. Furthermore, precise focus with less than one depth of focus is achieved within 0.004 seconds on our self-built high-speed focusing platform. The dataset and code will be made publicly available.

Nitrate and nitrite contamination in drinking water and cancer risk: A systematic review with meta-analysis
