In previous studies, we have demonstrated the biological activity of thymoquinone (TQ), an active compound extracted from the Nigella sativa plant, against cisplatin-induced neurotoxicity. Recenty, it was observed that there is an inherent lack in regulation of renal organic anion and cation transporters in cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Here, we report, for the first time, the effect of TQ on alterations in the renal expression of organic anion transporters (OATs) and organic cation transporters (OCTs), as well as multidrug resistance-associated proteins (MRPs) in rats treated with cisplatin. Twenty-eight 8-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into four groups of control, TQ treated (10 mg/kg b.w. in drinking water for 5 days), cisplatin (7 mg/kg b.w., i.p.) and TQ and cisplatin combination treatment. Cisplatin-induced malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-isoprostane increase was found to be markedly reduced in rats treated with TQ. In cisplatin only treated rats, the induced renal injury increased protein levels of the efflux transporters MRP2 and MRP4 while expression of OAT1, OAT3, OM and OCT2 was reduced. In combination TQ- and cisplatin-treated rats, expression of MRP2 and MRP4 proteins was decreased in the kidneys. Conversely, TQ treatment increased levels of OCT1, OCT2, OAT1 and OAT3 and decreased levels of 8-isoprostane and MDA levels in cisplatin-treated rats. In conclusion, the present study shows that the TQ synergizes with its nephroprotective effect against cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury in rats. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Maca modulates fat and liver energy metabolism markers insulin, IRS1, leptin, and SIRT1 in rats fed normal and high-fat diets

Hasan Gencoglu

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of Maca root extract on insulin, IRS1, leptin, and SIRT1 in normal and high-fat diet fed rats. The results showed that Maca reduced insulin levels in fat tissue and liver, increased IRS1 levels in fat tissue, and increased SIRT1 levels. This suggests that Maca has protective and regulatory effects when consumed with a normal or high-fat diet.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the impact of different doses of whey protein and amylopectin/chromium complex on muscle protein synthesis, amino acid and insulin levels, and the mTOR signaling pathway in exercised rats. The results showed that rats that received 3.1 g/kg of whey protein combined with chromium complex exhibited a significant increase in muscle protein synthesis. Additionally, the combination of whey protein and chromium complex had beneficial effects on insulin levels and the mTOR signaling pathway.

Summary: A combination of amylopectin/chromium complex and pea/rice protein can significantly enhance muscle protein synthesis, increase insulin and musclin levels, and activate the mTOR pathway. These findings suggest that the combination of amylopectin/chromium complex and pea/rice protein can be an alternative for muscle remodeling and repair after exercise.

The effect of oral administration of undenatured type II collagen on monosodium iodoacetate-induced osteoarthritis in young and old rats

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different doses of undenatured type II collagen (UC-II) on improving monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis (OA) in young and old rats. The results showed that all doses of undenatured collagen reduced knee diameter, while the higher doses (1.33 mg/kg and 2 mg/kg) improved Mankin score and gait measurements as early as day 14. The 2 mg/kg dose showed the best efficacy in improving Mankin score and gait measurements by 28 days post-OA induction. Undenatured collagen also reduced inflammatory and cartilage breakdown markers in both age groups.

Role of the antioxidant defence system and transcription factors in preventing heat stress in poultry: a dietary approach

Kazim Sahin, Emre Sahin, Patrick B. D. Deeh, Veysi Kayri, Cemal Orhan, Nurhan Sahin

Summary: The main stress factors that disrupt homoeostasis in poultry are environmental, nutritional, microbiological, and managing. Among these factors, high ambient temperatures have a significant impact on poultry production and health. High temperatures lead to oxidative stress and damage the antioxidant capacity of poultry. Nutrients such as vitamins E and C, selenium, and curcumin play a crucial role in enhancing the antioxidant defence system and mitigating the detrimental effects of heat stress.

Summary: Mango ginger extract has potential antidiabetic effects by reducing serum glucose, insulin, free fatty acid, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, increasing total antioxidant capacity, and decreasing malondialdehyde levels. It can also alleviate hepatocellular fat accumulation and promote the upregulation of heme oxygenase 1 in the liver through the regulation of GSK-3 beta/Fyn/Nrf2 signaling pathway.
