Summary: We believe that naming species after individuals is unfair and goes against principles of equality and representation. Reforming taxonomy to eliminate eponyms may be challenging, but it can have numerous advantages for both conservation and society.

Summary: Small-sized animal populations can face significant loss of genetic variability leading to extinction. Research on animal breeding has focused on mating systems to minimize genetic variability loss. Different breeding schemes have varying effectiveness in limiting loss of genetic diversity in small populations, with the best strategy varying for each population.

Summary: The study compared Cytb mtDNA sequences of different populations of two phytoseiid mite species to investigate genetic variations. Results showed higher genetic distances and differentiation in Phytoseiulus macropilis based on geographic location and pyrethroid resistance, while populations of P. persimilis were genetically similar, possibly due to their origin and commercialization. Protein analysis revealed no diagnostic mutation related to pyrethroid resistance, but identified mutations between populations of P. macropilis from different climatic regions. Further research is needed to understand the impact of these mutations.

Summary: The genetic diversity of Nubian ibex is higher in the southern region of Oman compared to the central region, with restricted gene flow between the two. Wild Nubian ibex form a distinct clade independent from captive ibex, supported by high genetic distances and F-ST statistics. Captive ibex are unlikely to originate from the wild population in Oman, indicating that the wild population in Oman should be considered a distinct taxonomic unit. Further nuclear genetic work is needed to fully understand the global taxonomic divergence of Nubian ibex populations.

Summary: Through a study of the Karasu River, it was discovered that there are three distinct populations of Euphrates trout, with two populations belonging to Salmo munzuricus and one population belonging to a newly named species, Salmo baliki. This new species has unique characteristics that differentiate it from other Salmo species in adjacent water bodies, as confirmed by genetic analysis of the Cyt b mitochondrial gene.

Summary: The study used molecular markers to revise the specimens of the Sorex araneus group in South Tyrol, Italy, detecting the presence of both S. antinorii and S. araneus in the region. This finding underscores the importance of revising museum collections using modern technologies to accurately assess the diversity of small mammal fauna at regional and national levels.

Summary: The naming of species after people, known as eponyms, in the endemic flora of New Caledonia mainly comes from France and Europe, with a smaller number from neighboring countries in Oceania or North America. Only 7% of these eponyms were born in New Caledonia, with 6% being women, and most corresponding species were described in the past five decades. While still preliminary, evidence suggests that a species' name can significantly affect how people relate to it, especially important for threatened endemic species and local populations' willingness to preserve them. Adopting a more balanced approach to species naming, especially for newly described rare and endangered species, may help secure their future in the current extinction crisis.

Summary: Viruses linked to animals in Antarctic latitudes, such as Antarctic fur seals, remain poorly studied. This study characterized the virome of fur seals using next generation sequencing and found various viruses, some of which are potentially new to the Antarctic fur seal species. The presence of these viruses is relevant for conservation efforts and contributes to a better understanding of the viral community in these animals.

Summary: This study analysed the feeding ecology and diet of the endangered Cuvier's gazelle in the Sahara desert. The results showed that the gazelles exhibit a browsing behavior, with acacias as the key species for their survival. The increasing grazing pressure on acacias calls for conservation measures to mitigate the impact of climate change and protect the gazelle's survival in desert environments.

Summary: The mountain gazelle in Israel, its last remaining stronghold with around 5,000 individuals, is facing various threats such as habitat change, fragmentation, poaching, and predation due to human activities. Policy and management actions are crucial to ensure the survival of this species, along with analyzing landscape connectivity and proposing interventions. Lessons learned from the mountain gazelle could be valuable for addressing increasing pressures on wildlife in human-dominated landscapes.
