Summary: Lichens, specifically Usnea barbata, are significant sources of antioxidants with high levels of usnic acid, polyphenols, and tannins contributing to their antioxidant properties. Different solvent extracts of Usnea barbata displayed varying levels of usnic acid, polyphenols, tannins, antioxidant activity, and cytotoxicity, with ethyl acetate and methanol extracts showing promising antioxidant effects but also high levels of cytotoxicity. Additionally, a moderate correlation was observed between the content of usnic acid, polyphenols, tannins, antioxidant activity, and cytotoxicity.

Summary: Lichens are a valuable resource for traditional medicine due to their diverse metabolites, with the study finding that acetone and ethyl acetate extracts of U. barbata showed the most potent anticancer effects against CAL-27 oral squamous carcinoma cells and V79 lung fibroblasts. The research suggests that the anticancer activity of U. barbata extracts may be partially due to an imbalance in antioxidant defense mechanisms leading to oxidative stress.

Summary: Nutraceuticals and functional foods, such as resveratrol, play a significant role in enhancing immune surveillance in menopausal women through increasing cytotoxic activity of lymphocytes. The study analyzed the effects of resveratrol on lymphocyte cytotoxicity in menopausal women, revealing increased cytokine production, immune synapse formation, and target cell lysis with resveratrol treatment, without affecting total antioxidant capacity of lymphocytes.

Summary: This study examined a series of 2,3-substituted quinazolinone derivatives for their biological properties, revealing that derivatives with electron-donating moieties exhibited the most potent antioxidant and DNA-protective effects without genotoxicity. Additionally, these compounds showed higher cytotoxicity in renal carcinoma cells compared to renal epithelial cells. The findings suggest that these quinazolinones may serve as potential model structures for the development of pharmacologically active agents.

Summary: In this study, nano-sized antioxidative biomaterials using selenium were developed to protect and accelerate the differentiation of C2C12 myoblasts in an oxidative stress environment. The selenium nanoparticles showed antioxidant effects, reduced apoptosis and intracellular ROS levels, and up-regulated genes associated with myoblast differentiation. These results suggest that SeNPs can be used for the treatment of skeletal muscle in a cellular redox environment.
