There are several studies that clearly indicate a close bidirectional communication between the neuroendocrine and immune systems. In this sense, hypothalamic releasing hormones, besides their neuroendocrine role, have been shown to influence immune functions. Despite studies developed in mammals, there is, as yet, no information available about the role of the pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) and PACAP-related peptide (PRIP) in the fish innate immune system. The present study has evaluated the effect of PACAP and PRP administered by bath immersion, on important parameters of innate immunity and antioxidant defenses in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fry. We have shown, for the first time, that administration of recombinant C. gariepinus PACAP not only promotes growth but also increases lysozyme, nitric oxide synthase-derived metabolites and antioxidant defenses in treated fry. From our results, PACAP appears to act as a regulator of the teleostean immune system, in addition to its physiological role in controlling growth of fish. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Oral Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Activating Polypeptide (PACAP) formulation modified muscle fatty acid profile and cytokines transcription in head kidney in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fingerlings

Summary: This study demonstrated that dietary supplementation with synthetic PACAP-38 can improve PUFA content in muscle, increase the number of caliciform cells within intestinal villi, and modulate the transcription of cytokines in head kidney of rainbow trout fingerlings. These findings suggest potential benefits of using small peptides as feed additives to enhance the quality of cultured fish fingerlings.

Gene Therapy for Polyglutamine Spinocerebellar Ataxias: Advances, Challenges, and Perspectives

Yaimee Vazquez-Mojena, Karen Leon-Arcia, Yanetza Gonzalez-Zaldivar, Roberto Rodriguez-Labrada, Luis Velazquez-Perez

Summary: Polyglutamine spinocerebellar ataxias are a group of autosomal dominant disorders caused by repeat expansions in single genes. While there is currently no curative treatment available, gene therapy strategies like RNA interference and antisense oligonucleotide therapy have shown promise in cellular and animal models. Gene editing strategies such as CRISPR/Cas9 have also been introduced to a limited extent, but face technological and ethical challenges in their potential use in future clinical trials.

Summary: COVID-19 is a highly contagious respiratory viral disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Researchers have developed a recombinant protein by fusing the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the viral protein spike (S) with the extracellular domain of CD154, an immune system modulator molecule. This recombinant protein has shown promising immunogenicity in mice and non-human primates, inducing a specific and high IgG response and neutralizing the virus. It has the potential to enhance the current vaccines against COVID-19.

Summary: In this study, a monoclonal antibody (mAb) specific to Nile tilapia IgT was generated and confirmed for its specificity. The mAb showed immunoreactivity against recombinant IgT fragment and native IgT in skin mucus. The percentage of IgT+ B cell populations differed between juveniles and adults and after immunostimulation. This mAb serves as an important immunological tool for studying the biological function and structural characteristics of tilapia IgT.
