Summary: The normal kidney contralateral to an MCDK exhibits a unique linear growth pattern during intrauterine life, with significantly higher growth during the third trimester compared to the second trimester. Compared to a solitary kidney, there is a significant compensatory trend in growth observed in the normal kidney contralateral to an MCDK during the third trimester. This study provides valuable information for prenatal counseling regarding future renal outcomes.

Summary: Genetic tests using chromosome microarray analysis (CMA) and whole-exome sequencing (WES) helped identify the genetic etiology of multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) fetuses, providing a basis for prenatal diagnosis and prognosis evaluation. Abnormal copy number variations (CNVs), including pathogenic CNVs and a variant of unknown significance (VUS) CNVs, were detected by CMA, and two MCDK fetuses were identified with Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) using WES.

Summary: The study revealed that in patients with solitary functioning kidney, unilateral renal agenesis (URA) is more commonly associated with syndromes or anomalies, and has worse outcomes over time compared to multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK). Patients with URA are more likely to experience hypertension, proteinuria, and chronic kidney injury.

Summary: This case report discusses an infant who underwent nephrectomy for hypertension due to congenital renal hypoplasia. The examination of the renal specimen revealed abnormal vascular structure and irregular renin localizations, which may be the cause of hypertension. Serum renin and aldosterone levels gradually decreased post-surgery, reaching normal levels on the 90th postoperative day, indicating a successful outcome.

Summary: TFE3-rearranged renal cell carcinoma (TFE3-RCC) presents with heterogenous morphologic and IHC features, with pathologists primarily focusing on cytologic characteristics and TFE3 IHC expression in the diagnostic work-up. Variability and preferences exist among participants in the use of additional IHC assays, positive cut-off for TFE3 FISH, and the need for further molecular studies in confirming TFE3-RCC diagnosis.

Summary: Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are a group of urologic conditions affecting the kidneys, ureter, bladder, and urethra. Ureteroceles and posterior urethral valves, both classified under CAKUT, do not have a known common pathophysiologic mechanism. This report presents the only documented case of CAKUT related to posterior urethral valves, ureterocele, and multicystic dysplastic kidney.

Summary: Follow-up is necessary for unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidneys (MCDK) due to the risks of contralateral kidney abnormalities and chronic kidney disease. A survey of senior UK pediatricians revealed significant variability in management, with 62% confirming diagnosis through a dimercaptosuccinic acid scan, 8% investigating contralateral vesicoureteric reflux through a cystogram, and 62% measuring renal function routinely. Concerns were raised about overcautiousness, but national guidance could offer consensus, safe variation, and choice for families. The estimated cost of follow-up ranged from £258 to £3854.

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the clinical features of 111 unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) patients, finding that the majority of patients were diagnosed prenatally, with some also having other urological anomalies. Complications such as urinary tract infections, renal failure, and scarring were relatively common among the patients.

Summary: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) occurring in the setting of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) shows unique clinicopathological characteristics, with acquired cystic kidney disease-associated renal cell carcinoma (ACKD-RCC) and clear-cell papillary renal cell carcinoma (ccpRCC) being the most frequent types. Other types of RCC also occur in ESRD, albeit with different frequencies from the non-ESRD general population. While the histological features of RCC do not vary in the setting of ESRD vs. non-ESRD, other findings, such as multifocality and multiple tumor types, are more frequent in ESRD. Studies have generated novel and important knowledge of the etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, immunophenotype, and molecular characteristics of ESRD-associated RCC.

Summary: This study examined the development of glomeruli and tubules in the kidney cortex of human foetuses at different gestational ages. The expression of proliferation marker Ki-67 and apoptosis-related markers Bcl-2 and Bax during nephrogenesis was also investigated. The results showed a spatiotemporal gradient of nephron differentiation and the morphological characteristics of definitive nephrons in the inner cortex. The size and density of glomeruli and tubules changed with gestational age, and the expression patterns of Ki-67, Bcl-2, and Bax varied throughout nephron development.

Summary: Creating obstructive uropathy (OU) during glomerulogenesis in fetal lambs leads to the formation of multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK). Through immunohistochemical techniques, we found that the expression of PAX2 and CD10 is associated with renal development. In the OU model, CD10 and PAX2 were expressed in the cystic epithelial cells, suggesting that cyst formation may be related to abnormal regulation of PAX2 in the nephrogenic zone epithelial cells.
