Human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C infections are sexually transmitted diseases that require sperm samples to be pretreated to eliminate the viral presence before their safe use in assisted reproduction treatments. In this report we describe our experience with sperm washing protocols applied to sperm cells from testicular biopsies as well as the results obtained in subsequent assisted reproduction treatments on seropositive males that are also azoospermic. SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and repercussions for male infertility patients: A proposal for the individualized provision of andrological services

Sandro C. Esteves, Francesco Lombardo, Nicolas Garrido, Juan Alvarez, Armand Zini, Giovanni M. Colpi, Jackson Kirkman-Brown, Sheena E. M. Lewis, Lars Bjorndahl, Ahmad Majzoub, Chak-Lam Cho, Pedro Vendeira, Jorge Hallak, Edouard Amar, Marcello Cocuzza, Fabiola C. Bento, Rita C. Figueira, Romualdo Sciorio, Rita J. Laursen, Ahmad M. Metwalley, Sunil K. Jindal, Sijo Parekattil, Ranjith Ramasamy, Carlo Alviggi, Peter Humaidan, John L. Yovich, Ashok Agarwal

Summary: Delaying non-urgent gamete cryopreservation services may be detrimental for subgroups of male infertility patients, and it is suggested to modify the current recommendations and provide a permissive approach similar to that for cancer patients. Postponing diagnostic semen analysis and sperm banking for specific patients may compromise their prospects of biological parenthood.

Do donor spermatozoa improve reproductive outcomes after oocyte donation failure? A retrospective analysis of cumulative live birth rates per donor oocyte consumed

Mauro Cozzolino, Irene Hervas, Rocio Rivera-Egea, Antonio Pellicer, Nicolas Garrido

Summary: The study found that using donor spermatozoa after the first failed oocyte donation cycle can improve IVF outcomes. The cumulative live birth rate (CLBR) curves for using autologous or donor spermatozoa can be used to determine the cumulative chances of live birth and provide guidance on when to replace spermatozoa.

Summary: The study identified a significant difference in allele frequencies of USP8-rs7174015 between the NOA group, the control group, and the SO group, suggesting a possible association of this gene with male infertility. Other genetic associations were found for EPSTI1-rs12870438 and PSAT1-rs7867029 with SO, as well as TUSC1-rs10966811 with TESE success in the context of non-obstructive azoospermia.

(Pro)renin Receptor Is Present in Human Sperm and It Adversely Affects Sperm Fertility Ability

Marta Gianzo, Itziar Urizar-Arenaza, Iraia Munoa-Hoyos, Zaloa Larreategui, Nicolas Garrido, Jon Irazusta, Nerea Subiran

Summary: The study confirmed the presence of (pro)renin receptor in human sperm and found that semen samples with higher percentages of PRR-positive spermatozoa are associated with poor sperm motility and embryo development.

Female obesity increases the risk of miscarriage of euploid embryos

Mauro Cozzolino, Juan Antonio Garcia-Velasco, Marcos Meseguer, Antonio Pellicer, Jose Bellver

Summary: The study found that obese women have a higher risk of miscarriage after euploid embryo transfer compared to women with normal weight, suggesting that factors other than chromosomal abnormalities may be responsible for this outcome.

Veltman, Feng Zhang, Moira K. O'Bryan

Summary: Currently, there is a lack of understanding and awareness about the causes of male infertility and the importance of male reproductive health. This leads to standardized treatment strategies using medically assisted reproduction techniques, which overlook the potential co-morbidities and shift the burden to women. To improve male reproductive health, it is essential to establish centers for data and sample collection and study the effects of genetics, epigenetics, and environment on fertility and offspring health. Personalized treatment protocols should be developed and education about infertility should be increased.

Will the introduction of automated ART laboratory systems render the majority of embryologists redundant?

Lorena Bori, Marcos Meseguer

Summary: IVF techniques are increasingly being automated in the laboratory, reducing the manual tasks of embryologists. This shift towards automation will lead to the emergence of new functions related to data capture and communication with other professionals and patients.
