Purpose To evaluate the effect of orbital floor triamcinolone acetonide (OFTA) injections on inflammation and visual acuity in active non-infectious uveitis. Methods Monocentre, retrospective study in 94 eyes (86 patients) with acute non-infectious uveitis receiving a single OFTA (40 mg) injection. Outcome measures were anterior chamber (AC) and vitreous cell counts, laser flare photometry, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and complications over a 6-month follow-up period. Results The number of patients with >= 1+ cells in AC and vitreous was significantly lower after treatment than at baseline (each, P<0.01 at the follow-up examinations). The anti-inflammatory effect lasted for the 6-month follow-up period. Laser flare photometry values were also significantly lower than the baseline levels at 3 (P<0.01) and 6 ( P=0.034) months. BCVA did not differ before and after treatment. Macular oedema was reduced in 27%, unchanged in another 59%, and worse in 14%. Within 6 months, ocular hypertension was observed in up to 8% and progressing cataract was noted in 29%. Conclusions OFTA injections improved AC and vitreous inflammation, but the effect on visual acuity and macular oedema was limited.

Quantification of Early and Intermediate Age-related Macular Degeneration Using OCT en face Presentation

Summary: This study investigated the potential for quantifying early and intermediate AMD using en-face optical coherence tomography, finding that a segmentation 6 mu m underneath the RPE with a slice thickness of 20 mu m was best for delineating drusen on the images. The quantification of drusen on en-face OCT images showed good similarity to the standardised drusen analysis on fundus photography, making it easier to assess other changes in early and intermediate AMD.

Summary: This study aims to develop convolutional neural networks (CNN) that can differentiate treatment indicated presentations of neovascular AMD (nAMD) based solely on SD-OCT scans. The results show that the developed AI algorithms have a high correlation with expert opinion and can provide diagnostic judgments on whether AMD needs treatment.

Correlation of retinal alterations with vascular structure of macular neovascularisation in swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography in age-related macular degeneration

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between the vascular architecture of untreated macular neovascularisations (MNV) in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) as visualized by optic coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and the functional and morphological alterations of the retina as visualized by optic coherence tomography (SD-OCT). The study included 107 patients with newly diagnosed nAMD, and automated quantitative vascular analysis was performed. The results showed that BCVA was significantly worse with greater MNV area and total vascular length. Fluid distribution differed significantly in relation to MNV area, total vascular length, and fractal dimension. Greater pigment epithelial detachment (PED) height was significantly associated with higher density of vascular nodes and lower average vascular width. Atrophy was present significantly more often in MNV with larger area, higher total vascular length, and higher flow density. There was no significant association between MNV parameters and central retinal thickness or the occurrence of haemorrhage.

Axial Stretching of Vessels in the Retinal Vascular Plexus With 3D OCT-Angiography

Julian Johannes Kuhlmann, Kai Rothaus, Xiaoyi Jiang, Britta Heimes-Bussmann, Henrik Faatz, Marius Book, Daniel Pauleikhoff

Summary: The purpose of this study is to describe and quantify the nonpathological axial stretching in the retinal vascular plexus in 3D optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images. The vessels in the OCTA images were found to be stretched in the direction of the A-Scan by a factor of 2.46 +/- 1.82, with a larger cross-section area resulting in higher axial stretching. The elliptical shape of the vessel's cross-section was found to deviate from the expected pathology of the vascular network in the human eye, suggesting the need for volume data correction before 3D analysis.
