Polypropylene (PP) was blended with ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) to form PP/EVA polymer blends. Wood powder (WP) was mixed into these blends at different weight fractions (50/50/0, 45/45/10, 40/40/20, 35/35/30 w/w PP/EVA/WP) to form PP/EVA/WP blend composites. The morphology, as well as thermal and mechanical properties, of these composites were investigated. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results confirm the immiscibility of EVA and PP in the blends, and show that WP is primarily concentrated in the EVA phase. DSC results further show that the EVA crystallization behaviour is significantly influenced by the presence of WP. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results confirm immiscibility of PP and EVA, as well as an interaction between EVA and WP. Interaction between EVA and WP was further confirmed by Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). TGA results show that the blend composite degradation was also influenced by the presence of WP.

Summary: The article focuses on the development of customized polyolefin formulations with low flammability and high weathering resistance to provide value-added polyethylene grades with extended service lifetime. The compounds achieved V0 classification in UL94V flammability tests while maintaining mechanical properties to a large extent, showing promise for outdoor applications where long-term weathering stability and flame retardance are important.

Comparative experimental and modelling study of the thermal and thermo-mechanical properties of LLDPE/wax blends

Mafereka F. T. Mosoabisane, Adriaan S. Luyt, Cornelia G. C. E. van Sittert

Summary: This article investigates the influence of molecular interaction and morphology on the thermal and mechanical properties of LLDPE/wax blends. The cooling rate is not sufficient to determine the interactions between the molecules in the blends, therefore, samples were cooled at different rates to model the thermal and mechanical properties. The results show the cocrystallization of wax with LLDPE and confirm the rapid crystallization of both components.

Summary: This article investigates the changing dielectric properties of a LDPE/ZIF-8 composite under gamma radiation. The study found that the conductivity of the samples increased linearly with increasing radiation dose, while the change in dielectric permittivity showed nonlinear behavior.

Reusable Macroporous Oil Sorbent Films from Plastic Wastes

Junaid Saleem, Moghal Zubair Khalid Baig, Adriaan Stephanus Luyt, Rana Abdul Shakoor, Said Mansour, Gordon McKay

Summary: This study reports the production of reusable oil sorbent films by upcycling waste PE and PP. The sorbent films have a porous structure, good oleophilic properties, and high oil uptake capacity. Additionally, the thermal and mechanical properties of the films were also examined.

Free-Standing Porous and Nonporous Polyethylene Thin Films Using Spin Coating: An Alternate to the Extrusion-Stretching Process

Junaid Saleem, Zubair Khalid Baig Moghal, Adriaan S. Luyt, R. A. Shakoor, Gordon McKay

Summary: Spin coating is commonly used to prepare thin films with uniformity and controlled thickness. However, it has not been successful in producing free-standing thin films of polyolefins due to their insufficient strength. In this study, we have achieved free-standing thin films of polyolefins, such as polyethylene, with varying thickness. These films can be used for hydrophobic coating, filtration membranes, and oil-sorbents.

Non-Wettable Microporous Sheets Using Mixed Polyolefin Waste for Oil-Water Separation

Junaid Saleem, Zubair Khalid Baig Moghal, Rana A. Shakoor, Adriaan S. Luyt, Gordon McKay

Summary: Mixed polyolefin-based waste requires immediate attention to mitigate its negative impact on the environment. The separation of these plastics is energy-intensive due to their similar densities, and they cannot be blended without compatibilizers due to their inherent incompatibility. This study presents non-wettable microporous sheets made from recycled polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), which demonstrate efficient oil-water separation and high reusability. These findings emphasize the importance of sustainable solutions for plastic recycling and mitigating oil spill problems.
