The present review article describes in detail the state-of-the-art of organic-inorganic hybrid materials based on polyimide/silica components. The article is divided in three parts. In the first the basic processing route for the preparation of these systems is described, i.e. the sol-gel technique, along with the strategies developed to control the final morphology. In the second part the curing characteristics, the dynamic-mechanical and the mechanical and fracture properties of hybrids with different morphologies are reviewed. Finally, the more technologically relevant applications devised for these high performance materials are discussed.

A Molecular Interpretation of the Dynamics of Diffusive Mass Transport of Water within a Glassy Polyetherimide

Andrea Correa, Antonio De Nicola, Giuseppe Scherillo, Valerio Loianno, Domenico Mallamace, Francesco Mallamace, Hiroshi Ito, Pellegrino Musto, Giuseppe Mensitieri

Summary: The diffusion process of water molecules within a polyetherimide (PEI) glassy matrix has been analyzed through experimental analysis of water sorption kinetics by FTIR spectroscopy, combined with theoretical information from Molecular Dynamics simulations, and with the expression of water chemical potential provided by a non-equilibrium lattice fluid model. This analysis allowed for a convincing description of the diffusion mechanism of water in PEI, providing molecular details of the process related to the effects of the cross- and self-hydrogen bonding established in the system on the dynamics of water mass transport.

Survey on Adsorption of Low Molecular Weight Compounds in Cu-BTC Metal-Organic Framework: Experimental Results and Thermodynamic Modeling

Antonio Baldanza, Domenico Mallamace, Giuseppe Mensitieri, Cosimo Brondi, Pellegrino Musto, Giuseppe Scherillo

Summary: This article provides a critical overview of experimental results and theoretical models for the sorption of low molecular weight compounds in Cu-BTC MOF, focusing on vibrational spectroscopy results and adsorption thermodynamics interpretation. The Rigid Adsorbent Lattice Fluid (RALF) model and its modification RALFHB model are introduced to address specific interactions and heterogeneity of adsorbent cages in Cu-BTC MOF.

Sorption of CO2, CH4 and Their Mixtures in Amorphous Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO)

Valerio Loianno, Antonio Baldanza, Giuseppe Scherillo, Pellegrino Musto, Giuseppe Mensitieri

Summary: The sorption of pure CO2, CH4, and CO2/CH4 binary gas mixtures in amorphous glassy PPO was studied at 35 degrees C up to 1000 Torr. A combination of barometry and FTIR spectroscopy in the transmission mode was used to measure the sorption of gases in polymers. The solubility of CO2 in the binary mixtures was found to be similar to that of pure CO2 up to a total pressure of 1000 Torr and for CO2 mole fractions of about 0.5 and 0.3. The NET-GP modeling approach was employed to fit the solubility data of pure gases and to predict the solubility of CO2/CH4 mixed gases in PPO, with a deviation of less than 9.5% from experimental results for CO2 solubility.
