This study aimed at evaluating hemogram and erythropoietic changes in cats experimentally infected with Trypanosoma evansi. Thirteen adult female non-breeding Felix catus were separated into two groups: seven animals were infected with 10(8) trypomastigotes each, and six animals were used as negative controls. Animals were kept in air-conditioned rooms and blood smears were performed daily for 49 days. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein at days 0, 7, 21, 35 and 49 and stored in blood-collecting tubes containing anticoagulant. Bone marrow was collected from the proximal epiphysis of the right femur at days 14 and 42 post-inoculation (PI). Total erythrocyte count, hematocrit and hemoglobin showed statistical differences among groups from the seventh day PI onwards (P < 0.05). The mean corpuscular volume and the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration remained normal, characterizing a normocytic-normochromic anemia. Reticulocyte count increased in the infected group from the 21 st day onwards, but remained near normal values suggesting a mild regenerative anemia. Moreover, the myeloid:erythroid ratio significantly reduced at day 42 PI, evidencing a bone marrow hematopoietic response. Based on these results we conclude that cats infected with T. evansi have normocytic, normochromic, regenerative anemia. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Summary: The growth of S. brasiliensis isolates was more affected by iron availability compared to S. schenckii, while both fungal species conidia became more prone to oxidative stress when exposed to iron in culture medium. However, the combination of itraconazole and deferasirox only resulted in synergism against a minority of S. schenckii isolates.

Summary: Researchers successfully developed a new biomaterial with antifungal biofilm activity by modifying a commercially available glass ionomer cement with a specific component. The modified cement showed strong antibiofilm activity against multiple drug-resistant Candida species, while maintaining its original micromechanical and hypoallergenic properties, making it a promising candidate for dental applications.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effects and toxicity of agricultural fungicides mefenoxam and pyraclostrobin against Pythium insidiosum. The results showed that both compounds had inhibitory effects on the pathogenic oomycete without causing toxicity in vitro and in vivo models. Further studies on pharmacokinetics, toxicity, and pharmacological interactions are necessary for evaluating their potential use in the clinical management of pythiosis.

Summary: The ubiquitous free-living amoebae (FLA) are microorganisms of significant medical, sanitary, and ecological importance. However, their characterization within solid matrices such as soil, dust, sediment, mud, sludge, and compost remain to be systematized. In this study, a systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to explore the global distribution of FLA in solid matrices. The analysis of 104 out of 4,414 scientific articles revealed that FLA prevalence in solid matrices was 55.13% globally. Soil had the highest prevalence (72.40%), followed by sediment (57.91%), mud (52.90%), dust (48.60%), and sewage sludge (40.19%). Acanthamoeba spp. (52.23%) and Hartmanella/Vermamoeba spp. (36.06%) were the most prevalent FLA species.

Blood concentrations of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium and dietary cation-anion difference in dairy cows

J. H. Silva, L. V. Q. Contreras, C. F. Ponath, C. Bondan, M. C. Machado, F. Gonzalez

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of pre and postpartum DCAD on serum calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium levels in peripartum Holstein cows. Blood samples were collected from 56 cows (18 primiparous and 38 multiparous) on different days relative to parturition to analyze mineral levels, while diet and urine samples were also collected. Prepartum DCAD showed a positive correlation with total and corrected calcium levels at day-7, and a negative correlation with magnesium levels at day-7. However, prepartum DCAD did not significantly affect phosphorus levels. Postpartum DCAD did not have any correlation with serum mineral levels. The study highlights the importance of considering parity and time period when evaluating mineral levels in Holstein cows during the transition period.

Summary: This study evaluates the antimicrobial activity of three 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives against Pythium insidiosum and determines their pharmacodynamic characteristics. Results show that Clioquinol, PH151, and PH153 are active against all isolates, with MIC values ranging from 0.25 to 2 μg/mL. They also exhibit a time- and dose-dependent antimicrobial effect, damaging the P. insidiosum cell wall. These findings reinforce the potential of 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives as new drugs for treating pythiosis.
