Summary: This study used 197 nulliparous rabbits to test potential strategies to overcome the consequences on reproduction associated with the selection for high growth rate. Results showed that establishing an RF line through selective breeding of elite animals and backcrossing with a long-lived productive maternal line (LP) could generate females with better early reproductive performance.

Summary: In this study, two neuroparsin genes (MrNP1 and MrNP2) were cloned from the freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium rosenbergii, and their roles in ovarian development and vitellogenesis were investigated. The results showed that MrNP1 and MrNP2 proteins can stimulate the expression of the MrVg gene, while silencing of these genes suppresses the expression of MrVg, VgR, and CyclinB genes. The coordinated regulatory action between MrNP1 and MrNP2 may be necessary for normal vitellogenesis in M. rosenbergii.

Summary: Hexamerins, the proteins stored in the larval haemolymph of insects, are used as raw material and energy during metamorphosis. A hexamerin protein, HEX 70a, is unexpectedly found in the nucleus of honeybee workers' brain and fat body cells, suggesting a potential role in chromatin-binding. HEX 70a binds to specific DNA regions associated with genes and histone marks, indicating its regulatory activity. The presence of HEX 70a in different tissues and its correlation with developmental expression further support its moonlighting function as a chromatin-binding protein.

Summary: This study found that queen bees predictably and reversibly adjust egg size based on colony size in a series of experiments. The size of the queen's ovary changes in the opposite direction. These adjustments are not solely determined by egg-laying rate, but by the queen's perception of the colony size. Egg size plasticity is associated with changes in ovarian proteins related to energy metabolism, protein transport, and cytoskeleton. The small GTPase Rho1 is identified as a candidate regulator of egg size.

Summary: Limiting calories or specific nutrients in a diet has been shown to extend lifespan and reduce reproduction in various species. However, recent findings in fruit flies indicate that supplementing their diet with cholesterol can extend lifespan to the same extent as dietary restriction while sustaining high egg production. The study also suggests that offspring viability is not compromised by the lifespan extension caused by dietary cholesterol supplementation.

Summary: The study found that juvenile triploid white sturgeon have a reduced aerobic metabolic capacity compared to diploid siblings, which may affect their growth and overall performance by limiting available energy. Despite lower weight and more deformities, other indices such as condition factor, hepatosomatic index, and swimming activity were mostly unaffected by triploidy. Further long-term studies are needed to determine if this lower growth performance in juvenile triploid white sturgeon persists through sub-adult, puberty, and final maturation stages.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in resource allocation between juvenile cuttings and adult trees of each sex in Salicaceae. Results showed that adult willows reserved the allocation to starch and secondary leaf metabolites, making them more resilient than young seedlings. Sex-specific differences in resource allocation and phytohormone regulation were observed, suggesting the occurrence of trade-offs in resource allocation in trees.

Summary: By analyzing the translatomes of Komagataella phaffii, it was found that cell-wall components represent the greatest number of nascent chains entering the ER during exponential growth in rich media. Transcripts encoding the transmembrane protein PMA1 sequester more ribosomes at the ER membrane than any others. Given the bottlenecks in heterologous protein production, certain host proteins may be potential targets for pathway improvement.
