Ulcerative dermatitis (UD) is a severe inflammatory skin disorder with an unknown aetiology. Recently, insulin receptor substrate 1 KO mice were shown to be fully resistant to UD. In this study, we showed that high-fat diet (HFD) feeding significantly increased incidence of UD in wild type (WT) C57BL/6 mice, as did lithium-mediated inhibition of GSK3-beta, which is a key negative regulator of IRS1. In contrast to WT mice, resistance to UD was fully preserved in HFD-fed Irs1-KO mice. Our results identify IRS1 as a key determinant of UD pathogenesis and establish a direct link between diet composition, obesity-induced inflammation and chronic ulceration.

Summary: The Japanese Type 1 Diabetes Database Study (TIDE-J) aims to establish a multi-center prospective longitudinal database of three T1D subtypes, with the goal of revealing distinct clinical courses and identifying novel markers for diagnosis. The study collects clinical data, genetic information, and biobanking samples annually to investigate clinical outcomes and predict disease severity in patients with T1D.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics and outcomes of immunosuppressed COVID-19 inpatients. The results showed that immunosuppressed patients were older and had a higher severity of illness. The prognosis varied according to the different immunosuppressed states, possibly due to the severity of the underlying diseases.

Summary: A case of allogeneic islet transplantation in Japan was reported, with a focus on using an original assessment method to monitor cellular autoimmunity. The method successfully detected the activation of islet antigen-specific CD8(+) T-cell responses, indicating the potential for non-invasive detection of pancreatic beta-cell damage due to recurrent autoimmunity.

Summary: The detection of other pathogens in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Japan is not frequent. Bacterial culture was more common, but the types of bacteria detected were limited. Larger cohort studies are needed to evaluate the impact of different pathogens on the clinical course of COVID-19.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between small dense low-density cholesterol (sdLDL-C) and the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients treated with high or low-dose statin therapy. The findings suggest that high-dose statin therapy can reduce the risk of MACE in patients with the highest baseline sdLDL-C.
