Summary: This study investigated the in vitro antiplasmodial activities of four native plants from Cabo Verde. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of Artemisia gorgonum and infusions of Tamarix senegalensis exhibited high antiplasmodial activities without cytotoxicity. Lavandula rotundifolia and Sideroxylon marginatum extracts showed moderate activities. The findings support the traditional use of these plants against malaria and suggest their potential as future antimalarials.

Summary: Traditional medicine, particularly plant-based remedies, is widely used in South Africa to alleviate pain and inflammatory-related conditions. The majority of the plants used come from woody species, with leaves and roots being the most commonly utilized parts. Ricinus communis L., Aloe ferox Mill., and Pentanisia prunelloides subsp. latifolia are among the most popular plants used for treating such conditions in South African folk medicine.

Summary: Snake envenomation is a neglected health problem in Tanzania, with most cases going undocumented due to reliance on traditional medicinal plants. Despite the wide use of medicinal plants in treating snakebites, there is a lack of information on their bioactive components. Further research on the phytochemicals of these plants may provide valuable scientific insights for the development of snakebite treatments.

Summary: The Carapa procera DC. and Pericopsis laxiflora (Benth.ex Baker) Meeuwen species from Cote d'Ivoire were found to have high antiviral activity against HCV, with low toxicity for hepatic cells. The crude extracts from these plants were rich in polyphenols, including active tannins. Removing the tannins from the extracts resulted in a loss of anti-HCV activity. Using a hydro-ethanolic solvent instead of methanol produced tannin-rich extracts with similar antiviral activity.
