NDM-5-producing carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae of sequence type 789 emerged as a threat for neonates: a multicentre, genome-based study

Li Wei, Yu Feng, Hongxia Wen, Hu Ya, Fu Qiao, Zhiyong Zong

Summary: This study identified a common carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) lineage in neonates that caused various infections and had been circulating in multiple hospitals for several years. The emergence of this lineage was likely due to the acquisition of a self-transmissible carbapenemase-encoding gene. The findings highlight the potential differences between CRKP lineages in neonates and adults.

A rare class A carbapenemase FRI-11 in Enterobacter clinical strain

Shikai Wu, Yanling He, Yu Feng, Zhiyong Zong

Summary: We identified a clinical strain of Enterobacter that was resistant to carbapenems but susceptible to cefotaxime and ceftazidime. The presence of the rare carbapenemase-encoding gene bla(FRI-11) on a plasmid containing two replicons, IncFII(pECLA) and IncFIA(HI1), sparked further investigation. The FRI carbapenemases, including FRI-11, FRI-2, FRI-3, FRI-4, FRI-6, FRI-7, and FRI-9, belong to the same group based on amino acid sequence similarity and are carried by plasmids containing an IncFII(pECLA) replicon. Awareness should be raised regarding plasmid-encoded FRI carbapenemases that confer an unusual carbapenem-resistant but 3rd-generation-cephalosporin-susceptible resistance profile.

Analysis of risk factors associated with healthcare-associated carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infection in a large general hospital: a case-case-control study

Wenzhi Huang, Fu Qiao, Yuhua Deng, Shichao Zhu, Jingwen Li, Zhiyong Zong, Wei Zhang

Summary: This study analyzed the factors associated with CRKP infection and resistance to carbapenems in K. pneumoniae. The study found that ICU admission, respiratory failure, age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index, admission from the Emergency, and imipenem use were risk factors for CRKP infection. ICU admission, respiratory failure, admission from the Emergency, and imipenem use were also identified as risk factors for resistance to carbapenems in K. pneumoniae.

Prevalence and clonal diversity of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae causing neonatal infections: A systematic review of 128 articles across 30 countries

Ya Hu, Yongqiang Yang, Yu Feng, Qingqing Fang, Chengcheng Wang, Feifei Zhao, Alan McNally, Zhiyong Zong

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive overview of the global epidemiology and clinical characteristics of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infections in neonates. The study found a pooled prevalence of 0.3% and a pooled mortality rate of 22.9% for CRKP infections in hospitalized neonates. While the clonal background of neonatal CRKP strains is diverse and intercountry dissemination is minimal, certain lineages and specific carbapenemase types exhibit wide distribution across continents. These findings underscore the urgent need for research and strategies to address the threat of neonatal CRKP infections globally.

Worldwide transmission of ST11-KL64 carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae: an analysis of publicly available genomes

Junna Wang, Yu Feng, Zhiyong Zong

Summary: This study investigated the transmission of ST11-KL64 strains based on genome sequencing and identified international and interprovincial transmission of these strains in China. The use of dynamic grouping in addition to static clustering provided higher resolution and increased confidence in determining transmission. These findings highlight the importance of coordinated actions to tackle multi-drug resistant organisms.

Pectate Lyase from Fusarium sacchari Induces Plant Immune Responses and Contributes to Virulence

Caixia Wang, Zhen Huang, Zhenzhen Duan, Lixiang Zhu, Ruolin Di, Yixue Bao, Charles A. Powell, Qin Hu, Baoshan Chen, Muqing Zhang, Wei Yao

Summary: Pokkah Boeng disease (PBD) is a major disease affecting sugarcane in China, causing severe damage to sugarcane production and economic development. This study aimed to analyze the function of the FsPL gene, which is a key virulence factor of F. sacchari, inducing plant cell death and triggering plant defense responses.

The Origins of ST11 KL64 Klebsiella pneumoniae: a Genome-Based Study

Junna Wang, Yu Feng, Zhiyong Zong

Summary: Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP),a type of bacteria resistant to carbapenems, poses a severe threat to global health and is associated with longer hospital stays and higher mortality rates in affected patients. The spread of CRKP is mainly driven by a few dominant lineages, including ST11-KL64, which is the most common type in China and is found worldwide.

Hijacking a small plasmid to confer high-level resistance to aztreonam-avibactam and ceftazidime-avibactam

Ke Ma, Yu Feng, Alan Mcnally, Zhiyong Zong

Summary: This study found that mobile genetic elements carrying antimicrobial resistance genes can hijack small plasmids, enhancing bacteria's ability to resist antibiotics. It also found that the presence of multi-copy small plasmids and pre-existing resistance genes on plasmids have different effects on bacteria's resistance.
