The purpose of this study was to compare a primary uncleansed 2D and a primary electronically cleansed 3D reading strategy in CTC in limited prepped patients. Seventy-two patients received a low-fibre diet with oral iodine before CT-colonography. Six novices and two experienced observers reviewed both cleansed and uncleansed examinations in randomized order. Mean per-polyp sensitivity was compared between the methods by using generalized estimating equations. Mean per-patient sensitivity, and specificity were compared using the McNemar test. Results were stratified for experience (experienced observers versus novice observers). Mean per-polyp sensitivity for polyps 6 mm or larger was significantly higher for novices using cleansed 3D (65%; 95%CI 57-73%) compared with uncleansed 2D (51%; 95%CI 44-59%). For experienced observers there was no significant difference. Mean per-patient sensitivity for polyps 6 mm or larger was significantly higher for novices as well: respectively 75% (95%CI 70-80%) versus 64% (95%CI 59-70%). For experienced observers there was no statistically significant difference. Specificity for both novices and experienced observers was not significantly different. For novices primary electronically cleansed 3D is better for polyp detection than primary uncleansed 2D.

Kyra L. van Rijn, Elise M. Meima-van Praag, Patrick M. Bossuyt, Geert R. D'Haens, Krisztina B. Gecse, Karin Horsthuis, Harmanna J. Snijder, Jeroen A. W. Tielbeek, Christianne J. Buskens, Jaap Stoker

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in predicting long-term clinical closure of Crohn's perianal fistulas. The results showed that the degree of fibrosis and MAGNIFI-CD index at post-treatment MRI are accurate in predicting long-term clinical closure, and they are valuable in the follow-up of perianal Crohn's disease.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the association between accuracy estimates, abstract conclusion positivity, and completeness of abstract reporting with acceptance to radiology conferences and journals. The results show that manuscripts with positive abstract conclusions were less likely to be accepted by radiology journals, while there was no significant association between accuracy estimates, abstract conclusion positivity, and completeness of abstract reporting with conference abstract acceptance.

Untangling and segmenting the small intestine in 3D cine-MRI using deep learning

Louis D. van Harten, Catharina S. de Jonge, Kim J. Beek, Jaap Stoker, Ivana Isgum

Summary: Cine-MRI of the abdomen is a valuable technique for assessing small intestinal motility, but the potential of 3D cine-MRI has been underexplored. Existing image analysis tools have limitations in studying intestinal motility as 3D structures, and deep learning-based segmentation of the small intestine performs poorly due to the anatomical variations among patients. This study proposes a multi-task method that tracks individual segments of the small intestine and performs segmentation using a stochastic tracker and a CNN-based orientation classifier, conditioned on the locations of intestinal centerlines.

Judit A. A. Adam, Edwin Poel, Berthe L. F. van Eck-Smit, Constantijne H. H. Mom, Lukas J. A. Stalpers, Jaap Stoker, Shandra Bipat

Summary: This study aimed to explore the feasibility of lymphatic mapping in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) and evaluate the impact of lymphatic mapping on radiotherapy for at-risk lymph nodes. The results showed that lymphatic mapping could identify potential metastases in at-risk lymph nodes, while the current radiotherapy regimen had suboptimal treatment for some nodes. Including at-risk lymph nodes in radiotherapy may improve treatment outcomes in LACC.

Viscoelastic properties of small bowel mesentery at MR elastography in Crohn's disease: a prospective cross-sectional exploratory study

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) in measuring fibrotic disease involvement of the mesentery in small bowel Crohn's disease (CD). The results showed that MRE can detect increased stiffness and decreased fluidity in the mesentery of CD patients, which are correlated with the extent of mesenteric fibrosis. MRE may potentially guide clinical decision-making regarding extended mesenteric resection in CD.

Summary: For patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases, the identification of genetic mutations, such as KRAS mutations, is crucial. This study investigates the potential of radiomics in identifying KRAS mutations using CT scans. While the radiomics model shows good accuracy in the internal test set, it performs poorly in the external validation set. These results highlight the importance of external validation in assessing the clinical applicability of radiomics models.
