Summary: Recent events have sparked a lively debate in Italy about the professional liability of psychiatrists. A study aimed to explore the attitudes and behaviors of Italian psychiatrists towards defensive medicine and professional liability. The findings revealed that many psychiatrists practice defensive medicine and feel that their guarantee of responsibility compromises their work. Younger physicians are more prone to defensive medicine, especially for patients at risk of suicide or violence. Psychiatrists in closed settings are more likely to face malpractice claims and complaints, leading to a greater tendency to act defensively.

Summary: The role of expert forensic psychiatrists is compared to that of a translator, translating medical language into legal language. The study found that psychiatric opinions have not yet achieved a status as a homogenous genre, with standardization and formalization processes only existing at the structural level. Expert psychiatrists limit the presence of the author's voice and avoid using narrative form in their opinions.

Summary: The study found that perceived commitment to the specialty and interest in the program were the most important factors when selecting forensic psychiatry fellowship candidates for interviews, while interpersonal skills and interview performance were key factors in offering positions. USMLE/COMLEX scores and honor society membership were not as crucial in the decision-making process. The lack of a set timeline during the application and interview process was identified as a common difficulty.

Summary: This study investigates the predictors of defensive medicine among Italian psychiatrists. The results show that younger female psychiatrists are more likely to practice defensive medicine and prioritize professional liability over patients' needs. Considering guidelines and good clinical practices as a way to reduce the risk of legal complaints and hospitalizing patients with violent intentions are identified as prominent predictors.
