New lifetime limits on the charge non-conserving (CNC) electron capture with excitation of the 417.9 keV nuclear level in the I-127 are established by using the coincidence technique. The analysed exposure is 0.87 ton x yr, collected deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN by the highly radiopure DAMA/LIBRA setup (approximate to 250 kg of highly radiopure NaI(Tl)). The new limit on the mean life is tau > 1.2 x 10(24) yr (90 % C.L.), about one order of magnitude larger than those previously available for CNC electron capture involving nuclear level excitations of I-127 and of the same order of magnitude than those achieved for analogous processes in Xe-129.

Summary: The launch of IXPE on December 9, 2021 has provided a new perspective in X-ray astronomy. In this study, we present the first observation results of GS 1826-238, a weakly magnetized neutron star, using IXPE on March 29-31, 2022. The upper limit of linear polarization degree (99.73% confidence level) is found to be 1.3% in the energy range of 2-8 keV. Coordinated observations with INTEGRAL and NICER were conducted simultaneously to constrain the geometry and inclination angle of GS 1826-238.

Timing Analysis of the 2022 Outburst of SAX J1808.4-3658: Hints of Orbital Decay

Summary: We analyzed NICER observations of SAX J1808.4-3658 and found similar behavior as previous outbursts. After peaking at a luminosity of about 1 x 10^36 erg/s, the pulsar entered a month-long reflaring stage. The average pulsar spin frequency during the outburst was confirmed to match previous measurements, indicating a long-term spin derivative and a rotating magnetic dipole. Furthermore, for the first time in twenty years, the orbital phase evolution showed evidence of a decreasing orbital period, which is influenced by a modulation with a period of approximately 21 years.

Summary: X-ray polarimetry is a unique method for investigating the geometry of highly magnetized accreting neutron stars. The X-ray pulsar, GRO J1008-57, was observed at different flux levels by IXPE during its outburst in November 2022. Despite variations in luminosity, the polarization properties of GRO J1008-57 remained consistent, with a polarization degree of up to 15% over the pulse phase. By analyzing the data using the rotating vector model, estimations were made for the pulsar inclination, position angle of the pulsar spin axis, and magnetic obliquity.

Summary: The study of XTE J1701-462 improves our understanding of weakly magnetized neutron stars, especially the physics and geometry of the hot inner regions close to the compact object. The polarimetric signal is found to be closely related to the higher energy blackbody component and its reflection from the inner accretion disk. The polarimetric signal is strongest in the horizontal branch of the Z-track and weakest in the normal branch.

Summary: We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the bright atoll source GX 9+9 using simultaneous X-ray polarimetric and spectral data from the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) and NuSTAR. The results show significant polarization in the 4-8 keV band, with a degree of 2.2% ± 0.5%. The NuSTAR broad-band spectrum exhibits an iron line and is well-described by a model including thermal disc emission, Comptonized component, and reflection. The polarization is consistent with a combination of Comptonization in a boundary or spreading layer, and reflection off the disc.

Summary: Accreting X-ray pulsars are expected to have a high polarization degree, but recent observations of EXO 2030+375 with IXPE show a low degree of polarization in both phase-averaged and phase-resolved studies. Using the rotating vector model, the magnetic obliquity is estimated to be around 60 degrees, indicating that the magnetic axis swings close to the observer's line of sight. The joint analysis of polarization, spectral, and timing data suggests a complex accreting geometry influenced by magnetic multipoles and gravitational light bending.

Summary: This study reports the detection of a localized polarization signal from the synchrotron X-ray emitting regions of Tycho's supernova remnant. The degree of polarization for the X-ray synchrotron emission is 9% +/- 2% averaged over the whole remnant, and 12% +/- 2% at the rim, higher than the polarization value observed in the radio band. In the west region, the degree of polarization is 23% +/- 4%. These results suggest a more ordered magnetic field or a larger turbulence scale in Tycho compared to Cassiopeia A.

Summary: We report the first >99% confidence detection of X-ray polarization in BL Lacertae, which was observed during a recent X-ray/gamma-ray outburst. The X-ray data suggest that the IXPE energy band is at the crossover between the low- and high-frequency blazar emission humps. Significant variability and polarization were observed, and the relative contribution from each emission hump was determined. The findings support the dominance of synchrotron self-Compton emission over hadronic emission processes during the observed epochs.

Summary: X-ray polarization measurements of the Crab nebula and pulsar by the IXPE satellite showed a global toroidal magnetic field with large variations in local polarization, indicating a more complex turbulence distribution than expected. The pulsar's emission was found to be unpolarized, except for significant polarization in the core of the main peak. The nebula exhibited a patchy distribution of turbulence, contradicting simple expectations from numerical models.

Summary: The IXPE satellite observed a shock passing through the jet of Markarian 421 in June 2022, revealing a helical magnetic field. The rotation of the X-ray-polarized radiation over a 5-day period indicated the presence of a helical magnetic structure in the jet. This rotation was unlikely to be produced by a stochastic process and was not observed in data at longer wavelengths.

Development of low-background Cs2ZrCl6 detectors to study raredecays in Zr isotopes

Summary: In this study, the chemical purity, crystal radiopurity, scintillating performance, and pulse-shape discrimination ability of Cs2ZrCl6 (CZC) scintillating crystals were systematically investigated. The CZC material exhibited high purity with an overall impurity level below 10 μg/g. The CZC crystals showed low content of radionuclides from U/Th decay chains, but contained cosmogenic Cs-134. The CZC crystals also demonstrated excellent radiopurity and particle discrimination ability as scintillating detectors.
