Summary: In this study, modified composites using Iranian zeolite and diatomaceous earth were developed and found to have stronger adsorption capacity for PFOS. The adsorption of PFOS onto the material was mainly due to electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. This research provides insights into the adhesion mechanisms of PFOS onto untreated and surfactant-altered zeolite and diatomaceous earth in aquatic environments.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of material substitution between C, NC and R biomass on forest industry raw material use and regional competitiveness. It shows that an increase in the availability of R biomass would allow traditional forest industry regions to maintain their competitiveness, while a perfect substitution between C and NC biomass would decrease their competitiveness and increase that of emerging forest industry regions such as South America, Asia and Africa.

Summary: The study focuses on preparing cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) reinforced composites using polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and polypropylene (PP). The effects of CNCs content and the addition of maleic anhydride (MA) on the mechanical and morphological properties were studied. The biodegradability of the composites was also investigated. The results showed that the environmental impacts of composites containing PHB are higher than those of PP.

Summary: The effect of pH on the extraction yield of phenolic compounds from liquid phases recovered after the hydrothermal treatment of black liquor was studied using batch and continuous reactors. It was found that reducing the pH slightly improved the extraction of phenol and guaiacol, but greatly increased the extraction yield of syringol. Lower pH also hindered the hydrolysis of ethyl acetate during liquid-liquid extraction. The experiments confirmed the superior performance of the continuous reactor and the degradation of phenolic products at higher treatment temperatures.

Summary: This study successfully fabricated plywood boards using virgin and recycled high-density polyethylene (vHDPE and rHDPE) films as formaldehyde-free adhesives, and achieved improved physical and mechanical properties by using PE-g-MA as a coupling agent. PE-g-MA played a crucial role in enhancing the interfacial bonding ability and stress propagation. The properties of plywood boards made with rHDPE were significantly improved, although the presence of impurities in the recycled film made the coupling agent less effective.

Summary: The present study aimed to minimize or eliminate the harmful effects of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin by using recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) as a nontoxic adhesive. The results showed that HDPE films provided mechanical properties comparable to UF adhesive, even with lower adhesive content and pressing time. The optimum conditions were an HDPE loading of 240 g/m(2), a hot-pressing temperature of 160°C, and a hot-pressing time of 5 min. This study confirmed the potential of recycled HDPE as a promising adhesive for environmentally-friendly plywood manufacturing.
