Summary: This study reveals the high concentration of nitrogen oxides in second-hand smoke, which can have harmful effects on health. It is worth noting that the one-hour mean guideline for nitrogen dioxide set by the World Health Organization was exceeded in the experiment. Additionally, the measured NOx values show positive correlations with the concentrations of other chemical components in cigarettes.

Summary: The study found that many outdoor hospitality venues in European countries have high levels of secondhand smoke, especially at night, in enclosed spaces, and with more smokers present. Countries with total indoor smoking bans and higher smoking prevalence also have higher outdoor secondhand smoke concentrations in hospitality venues.

Summary: The study found that countries with extensive or complete smoking bans had lower likelihood of SHS exposure in restaurants and bars compared to those with partial bans. Additionally, SHS exposure in restaurants and bars decreased significantly between 2014 and 2017.

Summary: This systematic review found that smoke-free legislation in hospitality venues is associated with a decrease in smoking behavior among young people, emphasizing the need for comprehensive smoke-free legislation without exemptions. The results indicate that comprehensive smoke-free legislation can reduce smoking behavior effectively.

Summary: This study found that exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) is associated with an increased risk of tuberculosis (TB) and latent TB infection (LTBI) in children. Furthermore, smoking also affects the accuracy of Interferon-Gamma Release Assays (IGRAs) and cytokine immune responses.

Summary: This study found that school-age children exposed to household second-hand smoke were shorter and at higher risk of stunting compared to unexposed children. The effects of second-hand smoke exposure were age-related, peaking in the 6-8 years age group. The risk of stunting increased with longer duration of second-hand smoke exposure, showing a dose-response relationship.

Summary: This study conducted a scoping review of the existing literature in Ethiopia to identify gaps in research on second-hand smoke exposure and smoke-free environments. The study found a limited number of research reports and highlighted the need for further research on compliance monitoring and enforcement of smoke-free laws in Ethiopia.

Summary: This study aimed to provide an accurate and updated estimate of the association between second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure and cervical cancer (CC) risk through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The results showed a significant association between SHS exposure and an increased risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and invasive CC. The intensity and duration of SHS exposure were found to be linearly associated with the risk of CC.

Summary: This study assessed the compliance with smoke-free laws in public places in Sylhet city, Bangladesh and found a moderate compliance rate of 52.7% at indoor locations and a very low compliance rate of 26.5% at outdoor locations. The study suggests that the government should prioritize implementing smoke-free laws in all types of public places, especially frequently visited places and transit sites, and display 'no smoking' signages across all public places.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of second-hand smoke (SHS) on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exposure and oxidative stress damage. The results showed that children are more vulnerable to SHS than adults and exposure to SHS increased the levels of VOC metabolites. In addition, urinary BMA and PMA were identified as potential short-term biomarkers of passive smoking.

Summary: This study identifies interactions between NFE2L2 genotype and SHS exposure in affecting asthma risk and severity in children. Specific SNPs were found to significantly interact with SHS exposure to increase asthma risk, with the interaction being replicated in an independent cohort for one SNP. The study also suggests that NFE2L2 genotype is associated with daily asthma symptoms in children with SHS exposure.

Summary: This study estimates the exposure to second-hand smoke and its burden of diseases in Iran from 2009 to 2020. It finds an increasing trend of second-hand smoke exposure and identifies respiratory infections, asthma, and otitis media as highly burdensome diseases. Policymakers in Iran need to pay more attention to the increasing burden of otitis media and asthma associated with second-hand smoke exposure.

Summary: Israel achieved high vaccination coverage and overcame barriers to vaccine uptake through a combination of efforts targeting the general population and specific subgroups. The country's vaccination campaign faced challenges such as hesitancy, access issues, and confusion about vaccine effectiveness, which were addressed through messaging, incentives, and adaptations to the delivery system. The strategies used by Israel to improve vaccine uptake may be relevant to other countries facing similar challenges in vaccination campaigns.

Summary: Israel has stood out for its rapid and effective COVID-19 vaccine rollout, with factors contributing to its success falling into categories of long-standing characteristics, health-system specific features, and recent efforts specific to the vaccination campaign. The synergy created among these facilitating factors has been crucial in Israel's success, distinguishing it from other high-income countries like the US, the UK, and Canada that have faced slower vaccine distribution due to lacking some of these factors.
