Summary: This study analyzed the long-term cost associated with expanding public health insurance coverage in Tanzania, finding that the average cost per beneficiary for insurance claims was $38.58. The findings suggest that even without expansion, financing requirements for insurance will triple by 2050, and increasing coverage would require substantial additional funding support.

Summary: This study investigated the political and economic factors that drive production and trade of poor-quality medicines in Indonesia. The expansion of universal health coverage has reduced revenues for physicians and pharmaceutical manufacturers, leading to market factors, such as shortages and physician-promoted irrational demand, which can drive markets for substandard and falsified medicines. Policy-makers must consider the potential impact on medicine quality when formulating rules governing health financing, procurement, taxation and industry to protect progress towards UHC.

Summary: Long Covid has had a significant impact on public services, economies, and population health worldwide, but there is no proven effective public health approach for its management. This essay synthesizes existing literature on public health policy in long Covid and discusses the challenges and opportunities it presents for the public health profession. The essay examines the utility of specialist clinics and community care, as well as outstanding issues related to evidence generation, health inequality, and defining long Covid, and proposes a conceptual model based on this information.

Summary: Government policies on taxation and social security have significant impacts on population health outcomes and health inequalities. However, there is a lack of evidence on the health consequences of these policies. The Health Equity and Its Economic Determinants project aims to use computer-based simulations to assess the potential impacts of taxation and social security policies across Europe on population health and health inequalities.

Summary: A living lab is a new emerging concept that develops digital innovations through co-produced design and development in real-life contexts. However, limited research exists on the establishment process of such labs and the scaling of digital innovations to other contexts. In low- and middle-income countries, particularly in public health contexts, the concept of a living lab has not been widely applied. This article investigates the challenges of building appropriate digital solutions for local public health challenges and scaling them through ongoing empirical work in India.

Summary: The study found that gender equality had a more significant impact on men's life expectancy than on women's in EU member states, especially in the domains of health, money, and knowledge. With the increase in gender equality, men experienced a faster growth in life expectancy, resulting in a narrowing of the gender gap in life expectancy.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought attention to the EU's health mandate, leading to discussions on the establishment of a European Health Union (EHU). However, the specific nature of the EHU remains unclear. This paper suggests that the EU's focus on health for all could form the basis of a common definition for the EHU. Key drivers for the development of an EHU include surveillance and monitoring, crisis preparedness, funding, political will, public health expenditure vision, population awareness and interest, and global health. The paper also outlines five scenarios for the development of the EHU, highlighting the importance of coordination and addressing cross-border health threats, while emphasizing the role of political choices made by EU Member States.

Summary: The 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association and 2018 European Society of Cardiology/European Society of Hypertension guidelines for managing high blood pressure have significant influence. While there are differences in the recommended blood pressure cut points and treatment approach, overall there is substantial agreement between the two guideline-writing committees. Harmonization of future guidelines would enhance the commonality of their core recommendations and encourage better prevention, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension worldwide.

Summary: The proliferation of composite data sources tracking the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the need for standardized compilation during large-scale infectious disease events. Challenges such as data dissemination, data elements, and epidemiological factors present obstacles to creating comprehensive spatiotemporal views of outbreaks. Efforts to reform the global health data ecosystem should focus on developing standards and best practices to address these challenges and ensure robust, transparent, and interoperable data.
