Summary: This study aimed to develop and validate a risk model to improve the prediction of major bowel dysfunction after restorative rectal cancer resection with neoadjuvant radiotherapy. Clinical characteristics and imaging parameters were evaluated using machine learning algorithms, and the prediction model was constructed based on logistic regression. The model demonstrated high accuracy in predicting major bowel dysfunction.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of untreated rectal cancer on bowel dysfunction and the relationship between pre-treatment and post-treatment function. It finds that pretreatment bowel dysfunction is common in rectal cancer patients, especially in older and male patients. Furthermore, pretreatment dysfunction can predict postoperative function.

Summary: This study found that mismatch repair-deficient, locally advanced rectal cancer is highly sensitive to PD-1 blockade. Additionally, no adverse events of grade 3 or higher have been reported, and no cases of progression or recurrence have been observed. Longer follow-up is needed to assess the duration of response.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term relation between anastomotic height after rectal cancer surgery and postoperative bowel function problems, and found that anastomotic height was associated with constipation, fecal incontinence, and major low anterior resection syndrome. The results of this study may serve as a guide for clinicians to effectively screen and treat incontinence and constipation during patient follow-up after rectal cancer surgery.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence of mental health disorders in patients who underwent restorative proctectomy for rectal cancer and its association with bowel symptoms. The study found that incident mental health disorders were common in rectal cancer survivors after surgery, and the presence of bowel and urinary functional impairment significantly increased the risk of poor psychological outcomes.

Summary: Rectal cancer is a highly lethal malignancy and surgery is the most common treatment option. The choice of surgical approach aims to maximize function while minimizing the risk of recurrence, and is determined by a multidisciplinary team assessing patient and tumor characteristics. Total mesorectal excision, including both low anterior resection and abdominoperineal resection, remains the standard of care for rectal cancer. Rating: 8 out of 10.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the incidence of LARS after anus-preserving surgery (APS) and the relationship between bowel volume loss and bowel function. The results showed that the length of excised bowel was positively correlated with bowel function, and a shorter length of the proximal margin (LPM) had a greater negative impact on bowel function. Controlling LPM to <10 cm may help improve postoperative bowel function.

Summary: Urogenital dysfunction is a common complication after surgery for sigmoid colon or rectal cancers, and it may result from various causes. This study evaluated urogenital dysfunction and associated factors after laparoscopic surgery at different follow-up times. The results showed that voiding function improved, but sexual function deteriorated, especially in male patients. Age <= 60 years and postoperative complications were strongly associated with male sexual dysfunction.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms and post-COVID-19 disorders of gut-brain interaction among hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The results showed that patients with COVID-19 had higher rates of gastrointestinal symptoms on hospital admission and lower rates of constipation and hard stools at 12 months post-infection compared to the control group. Additionally, the rate of irritable bowel syndrome was significantly higher in patients with COVID-19 than in controls.

Summary: This study found that a 6-week slow, deep breathing (SDB) intervention improved symptoms and altered rectal sensation in constipation-predominant IBS (IBS-C) patients. Additionally, SDB enhanced vagal activity, suggesting that the effect of SDB on IBS-C may be due to mechanisms involving autonomic responses.

Summary: Assessing MRI rectal and pararectal signs can accurately predict the need for segmental resection versus a more conservative approach such as shaving for rectal lesion management. The study found that specific rectal signs and the sacro-recto-genital septum pararectal sign were significantly associated with segmental resection, with nodular thickness and circumference being the most predictive signs. These signs, when combined, were predictive of segmental resection with an accuracy of 90.2%.

Summary: This study used qualitative content analysis to identify the quality-of-life domains most affected by rectal cancer surgery. The findings revealed that bowel dysfunction has a wide range of impacts on quality of life, including psychological and emotional stress, challenges in social roles and relationships, physical limitations, restrictions in leisure activities, and the need for self-empowerment and adaptation to change. These results can contribute to the development of a more patient-centered quality-of-life survey and provide valuable information for preoperative counseling.

Summary: Spiritual well-being is an essential aspect of health, particularly for Chinese children hospitalized with cancer who are generally non-religious. Culture significantly influences their spiritual needs, which include self-exploration, inner needs, a connection with others, and a connection with gods or fictional characters. Hope plays a key role in motivating children to continue cancer treatment. Culturally specific interventions should be developed to address their unique spiritual needs and enhance their spiritual well-being.

Summary: The ageing population has resulted in an increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in elderly healthcare globally. However, there is currently a lack of clarity regarding the types and roles of AI technologies in elderly healthcare. This scoping review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of AI technologies in elderly healthcare by examining the types of AI technologies employed and identifying their roles based on existing studies. The review found that AI devices used in elderly healthcare included robots, exoskeleton devices, intelligent homes, AI-enabled health applications and wearables, voice-activated devices, and virtual reality. The roles of AI technologies identified were rehabilitation therapists, emotional supporters, social facilitators, supervisors, and cognitive promoters. The results showed that AI technologies have a promising impact on elderly healthcare, meeting the unmet care needs of older adults and demonstrating great potential for further development in this field. Future well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to validate the roles of AI technologies in elderly healthcare.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an interactive mHealth program on quality of life among community-dwelling older adults with chronic diseases. The results showed no significant differences in the primary outcome between the mHealth+l group and the control group, confirming that there were no incremental benefits to adding interactivity in mHealth programs for older adults. However, the mHealth+l group showed improvements in secondary outcomes such as self-efficacy, systolic blood pressure, pain levels, and health services utilization.
