Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in sexually active women who participated in the cervical cancer screening program in Natal, Brazil. Study design: The study included 261 sexually active women resident in the metropolitan area of Natal, Brazil and attending a public clinic for cervical screening. From each participant, a sample of exfoliated uterine cervical cells was collected, using a cytobrush which was conditioned in a tube containing a preserving solution (PBS + vancomycin + nystatin) and sent to a laboratory where it was processed for DNA extraction. The samples were analyzed for the presence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 DNA in separate reactions by PCRs using specific primers. Results: HSV-1 in genital infection is four times more prevalent than HSV-2 in the population analyzed. The highest prevalence rates for both viruses were found in women aged 31-39 years. We did not observe any association between the presence of both virus serotypes and socio-demographic characteristics in the population studied, nor with some classical risk factors for sexually transmitted diseases. Conclusions: HSV-1 was the major cause of genital infection by Herpes simplex virus in the women included in this study. No association was found between HSV infection and the socio-demographic characteristics or some classical risk factors for sexually transmitted diseases. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Summary: Chronic Chagas disease (CD) patients with cardiac clinical form release less NETs compared to non-infected individuals, potentially increasing the risk of death in CD patients with cardiac events. The release of DNA and elastase by neutrophils from CD patients was measured to investigate their role in the disease.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of Zika infection in asymptomatic pregnant women attending two public maternities in MaranhAo state, Northeast Brazil. The findings show that ZIKV infection was common in umbilical cord and placental samples, but did not result in morphological or psychomotor abnormalities in newborns at birth. These results highlight the importance of awareness of the risk of ZIKV infection during pregnancy and the need for improved healthcare and strategic planning for obstetric and neonatal care.

The role of HPV-induced epigenetic changes in cervical carcinogenesis (Review)

Summary: Cervical cancer, caused by high-risk HPV infection, remains the second most common cancer type in women in developing regions. Epigenetic modifications are stable changes in DNA that affect gene expression and genomic stability, playing a key role in various biological processes. These modifications have been identified in both viral DNA and infected cell genomes, contributing to the development of cervical cancer.

Summary: Type 1 diabetes mellitus is caused by an autoimmune response that leads to inadequate insulin production due to the progressive loss of pancreatic islet beta-cells. Genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors contribute to the deregulation of the immune system responsible for this condition. In addition to immune cell infiltration and inflammation of the islets, other factors, such as HLA and other immune-related genes, polymorphisms, epigenetic modifications, and the microbiome, play important roles in the etiology and pathogenesis of this metabolic disorder. Dysregulation of regulatory T cells, influenced by gene expression and epigenetic modifications, is crucial in the development of the disease.

Role of lncRNA Alterations in Cervical Oncogenesis

Summary: This study investigated the biological significance of changes in long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expression induced by HPV oncoproteins in the development of cervical cancer. The results showed that alterations in lncRNA expression were associated with higher staging and worse prognosis in cervical cancer. These changes can affect target gene regulation by competing for miRNAs, and play roles in various biological processes such as chromatin modification, transcription, translation, splicing, and epigenetic regulation.

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess the influence of the test-to-delivery interval on the performance of ultrasound and MRI in predicting birthweight. The results showed that MRI performed best in predicting birthweight greater than gestational age if delivery occurred within two weeks of the examination, with a slight decrease thereafter, while ultrasound performance decreased drastically over time.

Induction of labor versus expectant management in patients with idiopathic polyhydramnios

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate whether induction of labor is associated with a lower risk of cesarean section in patients with isolated polyhydramnios. The study found that planned induction was associated with a lower rate of cesarean delivery compared to expectant management, but the difference was not statistically significant. Additionally, no differences were observed in maternal or fetal secondary outcomes.
