Several studies have shown the effect of dietary patterns on breast cancer risk, but none has been conducted in Argentina. The aim of this study was to extract dietary patterns from Food Frequency Questioner, to estimate their effect on breast cancer occurrence while taking into account aggregation factors (family history of breast cancer) and to explore the sensitivity of the estimates to changes in the assumptions. A principal component exploratory factor analysis was applied to identify dietary patterns, which were then included as covariates in a multilevel logistic regression. Family history of BC was considered as a clustering variable. A multiple probabilistic sensitivity analysis was also performed. The study included 100 cases and 294 controls. Four dietary patterns were identified. Traditional (fat meats, bakery products, and vegetable oil and mayonnaise) (OR III tertile vs I 3.13, 95 % CI 2.58-3.78), Rural (processed meat) (OR III tertile vs I 2.02, 95 % CI 1.21-3.37) and Starchy (refined grains) (OR III tertile vs I 1.82, 95 % CI 1.18-2.79) dietary patterns were positively associated with BC risk, whereas the Prudent pattern (fruit and non-starchy vegetables) (OR III tertile vs I 0.56, 95 % CI 0.41-0.77) showed a protective effect. For Traditional pattern, the median bias-adjusted ORs (3.52) were higher than the conventional (2.76). While the Prudent pattern was associated with a reduced risk of BC, Traditional, Rural and Starchy patterns showed a promoting effect. Despite the threats to validity, the nature of associations was not strongly affected.

Urban social determinants of non-communicable diseases risk factors in Argentina

Natalia Tumas, Santiago Rodriguez Lopez, Usama Bilal, Ana F. Ortigoza, Ana V. Diez Roux

Summary: This study examined the associations between education level and non-communicable disease risk factors among Argentinian adults. The results showed that the effects of individual-level education varied by gender and were modified by city education. In addition, there were contextual effects of neighborhood and city education on some risk factors. This study highlights the importance of context and gender sensitivity in tackling non-communicable disease risk factors in urban areas of Argentina.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on the weight and mental health of Italian patients with obesity. The results showed that 48.8% of participants gained weight, 27.1% lost weight, and 37% experienced increased emotional difficulties. Additionally, 61% reduced their physical activity and 55% experienced changes in sleep quality and quantity. Lack of online communication with obesity centers was strongly correlated with weight gain.

Exosomal FZD-7 Expression Is Modulated by Different Lifestyle Interventions in Patients with NAFLD

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a complex disease characterized by increased triglyceride levels and fat accumulation in the liver. The progression of NAFLD is associated with changes in the Wnt/Frizzled (FZD) signaling pathway. This study found that the expression levels of FZD7 in exosomes derived from the plasma of NAFLD patients were significantly higher compared to healthy individuals, but these levels normalized after 90 days of specific lifestyle interventions.

Premenopausal Syndrome and NAFLD: A New Approach Based on Gender Medicine

Livianna Carrieri, Alberto Ruben Osella, Fausto Ciccacci, Gianluigi Giannelli, Maria Principia Scavo

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a complex condition that affects 25% of the global population. There are geographical and gender differences, but they decrease with age. Factors such as hormonal imbalance, microbiome dysregulation, insulin resistance, early menarche, breastfeeding duration, and polycystic ovarian syndrome contribute to the development of NAFLD in premenopausal women. Future clinical management and research should focus on personalized monitoring and treatment, particularly for women who had early metabolic symptoms considered insignificant at the time.
